View Full Version : Holes in my fresh water tank

While sanitizing my fresh water tank I noticed water dripping out along the side of the low point drain. That's not good I thought and began to investigate. I opened up the underbelly and got drenched with all the water trapped above the chloroplast. Instead of finding a crack, I found 4 very nice round holes, added by yours truly when I installed my BAL hide-a-spare...<groan>.... Grabbed a milk jug, soldering iron, heat gun and metal putty knife, and did some plastic welding to fix my mistake. Refilled with water to test, pushing on the tank to make sure the welds hold. It was the late evening at this point, so left the water in over night and checked in the morning. All was good. Buttoned up the bottom of the trailer and resanitized the tank. Next morning I had water again..<groan>... Think my welds did not hold, I opened her up again , only to discover a new hole I added when I screwed the chloroplast back up.... Kick self in.... Well you get the picture. And plastic weld and all is good, out camping this weekend and all the welds are holding just fine.

So the moral of the story, know where your tanks are before making any modifications, I thought I knew but was off about 6 inches. So don't guess remove a few screws and take a look so you really know.

Feel your pain and glad you got it sorted out. I came close to doing something similar. Had the coroplast down to dry out water from road spray intrusion. Two of the self tapping screws appeared to be broken - was going to replace with new, longer screws. Well, the screws weren't broken they were shortened so as not to puncture the fw tank. Luckily, I realized this before damaging the tank. BTW, on our 5er, the support straps for the fw tank are anchored to the cross members from above (before the tank is set in place)with these same hex screws. The hex heads had worn 'divots' in plastic where the tank was resting on them. Lifted empty tank enough to place fender washers over the screw heads.

I almost made the same type of mistake, and it's easy to do. I was putting extra tie-downs in my last toy hauler, and almost drilled into the top of the fuel cell. Fortunately I measured twice, and got lucky!

Glad you were able to "undo" the woops.

Do you have any Eternabond tape that should do it.

The straps that hold my fresh water tank are screwed in from the top as well, but they are rounded top screws, not hex head one.

Well - there you go. Either the factory figured out that round headed screws should be used, or.......the guy installing straps ran out of hex headed screws and used round headed ones:banghead:
