View Full Version : New type of clear plastic screen door slider

We've been to several RV shows recently, Tampa and Chicago, and saw several of the newer model RV's with a new type of screen door slider, made out of a clear plexiglass/acrylic material. What is nice about it, is you don't have to open the plastic slider to open the exterior door. You just push down on a clear knob and it opens the exterior door. You really don't even have to slide the plastic over any more - almost eliminates that requirement, but there still might be some reasons to slide it over, which it still does.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Is there a aftermarket version of it?

It makes a lot of sense, finally a better way.

A buddy of mine had one of these on his last trailer. I think it was a Citation. I don't have one on my Montana but I wish I did.

I don't know if you could find one and retro fit it or not. Don't know why you couldn't.

I bought one for our Cougar, but it wouldn't fit properly. I then just made a "lexan slider" out of a sheet of 1/8" lexan that I bought at Lowe's. About 10 minutes on my band saw and I had it installed. I did not attempt the "fabricated hole" with the plunger to open the door without sliding the lexan. Realistically, you can't close the door without sliding it to grasp the lock to pull the door closed, so all it does it eliminate 1/2 of the sliding anyway.

My 2015 Coleman (manufactured 5/2014) has one on it. I will have to check and see if there is a name on it. May be a Lipert product.

My DS's 2011 Springdale TT has this type of slide. Kind of odd that Keystone mixes and matches. I think this slider is really handy. Eliminates forgetting to close the slider once you have exited the screen door and still slides out of the way of the latch when you close the outer door. His trailer also has a 'scare' light on the road side so you can see to hook up your utilities.:)

It came stock on mine and is much better than the old style slider.

I would be happy to take a pic but 3 feet of snow in the yard and these zero temps make it difficult. Cant wait for spring.

I had 2 of these on my 2011 Heartland North Trail. When I bought the Premier I would have loved if it had them but it did not. We have just the cheap white plastic sliders now.

Thanks Wahoonc that's it - I should have taken a picture at the shows, but didn't think about it.

I notice many of them on the new RV have a little sticker on them saying, "Patent Pending", so I assumed it is fairly new idea.

I've checked online, but so far haven't found anything, just hoping someone else has, or I might do like JRTJH and try to make one myself. My current RV door slider works fairly well, but had a previous TT that would come out every darn time, ERRRR!

It's not that new. I've seen them on lots of non Keystone trailers for the last two+ yrs. may be a new change for Keystone.

My 2013 Fuzion came with that.

They are available online. Here's a couple of links: The one I found at my local dealership was the wrong size (even though I thought I had measured it correctly) which is why I decided to just make my own.

Our 2013 Rpod had it (just like the clear one pictured above by Aaron with the push-down). There's no comparison - it was so much better than the white one that we have to slide open. The first year we owned our Premier, we went on a search every time we'd go to an RV store. They have the inserts, but they're all the size of the Rpod, which is a lot smaller than ours. However, Aaron's doesn't look as narrow. Maybe there's hope that someone actually makes one that would fit.

So the Amazon one is just the bubble part and not the rest of it?
Being in Canada with shipping it would be nice to have the complete kit :)
My magnetic screen doors work great as the dog can come and go as she pleases but one of these kits would be nice too :)

Edit: Won't fit our door. Darn.

Thanks Laredo2910H(tx)

I had previously found the one's that JRTJH had posted, but the ones you showed were exactly what I was looking for. Not only do they allow you to open the door without opening the slide, they are so much more substantial and solid feeling. While that seems odd to say, the white plastic sliders in our RV seem to at least once or twice a trip in nice weather, they seem to jam, come out, pop out, --- well you all know!!!!

Too big or too small? If they are too big, they can be cut down pretty easily.

Can't help much if they are too small.

That type with the knob came on our 2012 Laredo, the only problem we have is there is no place to hook your fingers on. If you try to close the door and the wind is blowing it tends to blow open on you.

Ordered the new clear slider from Amazon today. They said it would take 2-4 weeks for delivery. Guess it will make it before April 1? I had looked at the amazon site earlier, but didn't know what to look for in a search, so again thanks to Laredo.

Actually ordering the part direct from Lippert is cheaper, @ $24.03, but shipping is $15.50, so total price of $39.53. Amazon has it for $36, even, and I get free shipping so in the end it works out cheaper. Assume both need to include tax now, plus I ordered some other stuff too. I'll post a follow up when I install it.

Please let us know how it fits. It appeared too small for ours, but maybe our measurements are off.

I saw one at the RV show last weekend. That was the highlight of what could only be described as a lackluster show.

I tried a couple of different setups, and so far, this one is working the best. I installed two strong magnets on the screen door frame and removed the latch catch on the trailer frame. I had to epoxy glue a metal piece to the aluminum frame so the magnets will stick. The door can be easily opened and closed without using the latch or opening the door slide. Screen door still latches to trailer door normally.

As I posted about earlier, I ordered and got the Lippert clear plastic screen door slider. It came in, and I tried to see if fit - No luck. The size of the slider is approximately 12 x 9 3/4", but more importantly, the orientation of the slider is the 12" side is to be the horizontal side, with the 9 3/4" to be the vertical side, and the knob is to be placed in the lower right had corner when your inside of your RV. I've attached a picture of the slider with measurements and knob direction of action which I added.

My RV, the Cougar has the opening close to the mentioned size, but rotated 90 degrees from the expected orientation. And the screen door release handle is located what would be the upper right hand corner of the opening. Oddly, the replacement slider fits - very tight, which I could fix by a little trimming, but the problem of the orientation of the knob operation not moving to release the latch still remains. In the rotated position it would almost work, with the exception of the direction the knob slides.

My bad on the assumption that all RV door sliders are the same, and the latches are in somewhat the same position. On our 5ver, the exterior door handle and lock are located close to the bottom of the opening, and screen door latch is on top. This slider is based on the the reverse of this layout.

Personally, I still like the clear plastic slider option, and figured I would relplace the other solid panel with clear plastic, but will now have to make this my self. Actually, when I looked at this, $35 is very pricey for what we were getting so in that regard, I'm not disappointed it didn't work, and I'm returning to Amazon. :(

You might measure yours, and check for the sizes I put into the image. The problem I had, it didn't say on the description which way the sizes were oriented. And like I said, it almost fit, just the wrong orientation.

Again, the location of the screen door latch on my 5ver is above the regular door hand, and this fits a door where those are reversed from that.

I installed the Camco unit in my 5er, came with both pieces and I have another accessory that you push on to open the screen door, I got the screen door thingy just before I put the trailer into storage and will install it when i bring it home before we go out again. Only have to drill a 9/16" hole to install it.
