Fellow RVers,
We just purchased a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short-bed LTZ with a rated tow capacity of 9200 lbs. My question is: Can it tow a 5th wheel? One of our requirements is the truck needed to fit in the garage. Thanks, -John

I dont think a 1500 is designed for a fifth wheel. I think youd need to go 2500/3500 for a fifth wheel. You'd be fine with a bumper pull.

Take a look at the sticker inside the door to see what weight the truck is rated for. Once you have those numbers you can begin to see what you can tow.

Correct me if I have this bass-ackwards, but didn't you put the cart before the horse? A Chevvy Silverado 2500 is 78 1/4 inches tall, and will haul a lot. AND it will fit in ANY garage. Unless the door is a special size, standard height is 7 feet. You will have to look long and hard to find a very small 5v'er to haul safely. Can you tell the dealer you changed your mind?

I'm actually quite surprised. Scamp makes a 19' 5th wheel that weighs 3k and has a 400' hitch weight!

John-
5th wheels come in all sorts of sizes and weights. Some properly equipped 1/2T's can tow some 5th wheels but the choice is pretty limited.

Without knowing anything about the door sticker information on the truck and absolutely nothing about the "5th wheel" you might be considering, it is impossible to answer your question -"Can it tow a 5th wheel?".

There are some fifth wheel models that may fall within the weight limits of your payload/GVW, GCWR and axle ratings. However, if you look at page 9-81 of the vehicle Owner's Manual both the 4x2 and the 4x4 crew cab short bed models are highlighted with a note (b).

This is the note: "b) This model is neither designed nor intended to tow fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers."

So, whether you ignore the factory restriction or not is pretty much up to you, but GM indicates the vehicle wasn't engineered for fifth wheel towing.

All, Many thanks for the responses. We'll look for a travel trailer that suits our needs. Maybe a Keystone Cougar.

Notanlines, A Chevy Silverado 2500 does not fit in our garage length wise. We have a staircase that takes up room. We did the measurements. Thanks for your input. -John

Trailers really are a better fit. I have pulled several 5ers with a 1/2 ton just fine but they were all small with out a bedroom, just a bed you crawl up and into. Just check out the weights and you will find out what will work.

We have a 238ML that' has been very good. A walk-around queen, good kitchen and two bunks in the back. There is another model that removes the bunks and moves the entry door to the rear. There are days that I wish we had gone with that model because the bunks are only used for storage most of the time.

Take your time, sit in lots of them, then decide. Each has their own personality. One of them will speak to you.

Birchyboy, we plan to do that. Thanks for the tip!
