I am thinking of getting a new 2015 ram 3500 dully and was wondering if I did would I be legal to haul a 17,000 lb doze on a gooseneck trailer rated for 20000lbs. Also do I have to do anything different since I'll be using the dozer to do work and making money with it ( tagging the truck different, license and so on ).

I think every state is different. My srw F350 is rated at over 10,000 pounds which makes it a commercial vehicle but since I do not use it for work, there is a loop hole that it can be non commercial but I have to have it inspected at a commercial place for a regular inspection. If it was a DRW then it would have to be registered as commercial as there is no why around it. Your state could be different.

I would think that the best way to find out the answer to your questions is to contact the appropriate motor vehicle licensing authority for your state. As indicated above, the regulations vary from state-to-state so what is legal in one may not be in another. Check out your local/state regulations to find out for certain.

Providing you with information that pertains to states other than your home state of TN really doesn't help much.

A good example of what was already mentioned....in IL my car trailer had to have a DOT inspection because it was registered over 5k lbs. The truck got different tags based on weight. The most common was a B tag which was good up to 10k GVWR (they registered my truck for that at the dealership even though it has a 13k GVWR).

In NM, the trailer doesn't need an inspection, the truck gets the same tag regardless of weight (up to 26k) I just have to tell them how much weight I want listed on the registration and they charge accordingly. Anything over 26K (26,001) is considered commercial. Towing my RV requires a CDL because of weight, but I can get a class E license which is a CDL exempt and allows me to tow RVs without a CDL. Any other trailer with a GVWR over 13k lbs (GCWR over 26k) would require a class A CDL. It can get really confusing trying to figure it all out on-line. As already mentioned, better off just going to the DMV.
