I'm not 100% sure on the Montana, but they are similar to the Alpine. My hitch lights are on a switch in the battery compartment.

The hitch box light and the scare lights are on the same switch on our Montana High Country. Wish the hitch box light had it's own switch. I would like to use it, but, despise the scare lights.

Yes it's on when the scare light is on, but I've found ours to be next to useless & use a Cree flashlight with the back window open instead.

I have found the light in the bed of my truck more useful than the hitch light. The hitch light tends to be in my eyes backing up. The cab/bed light is shining on the hitch more in my Ram.

I had to lower my 5th hitch to level the new Montana. Now I can't see the truck hitch. I had those tennis balls on a telescoping magnetic pole and tried that. It "sticks" pretty good to my hitch frame. Works good. I'm thinking about just leaving it there as I go down the road.
I fold down the rear seat to hitch because the center headrest is in the way big time.
Thanks for the info fellas, I didnt think that light should be on. the switch the dealer wired it to
