Self Adjusting Brakes

OK opinions needed: Do the Dexter self adjusting brakes require manual adjustments from time to time?

Yes, any self adjusting brake will need tightened up sometimes in my opinion. It's been my experience they generally don't work the way they are suppose to after awhile. I normally adjust them up while packing the bearings in the beginning of the camping season. Easy to remember it then.

I agree they need help. I adjusted the trailers self adjusting brakes and will do so each spring also just did my camry's self adjusting brakes. I think all brakes with shoes reqiure you to help them by adjusting. Dexter says adjust after 200 miles and every 3000 miles. It should be one of those pre season checks along with bearing, tires and after you do it you will see it is easy, takes acouple minutes or pay someone to do it.

The Dexter self adjusting brakes are just that. Yes, the regular brakes should be manually adjusted every three thousand miles, but after some 20,000 miles on our rig, never need to adjust them. These are forward adjusting brakes, unlike automotive drum brakes, that only adjust when backing. It is so difficult to get a spoon in to adjust these, that just get them close when installing the drum is all that is needed. Careful braking for a short distance usually gets them adjusted. My information is from the Dexter manual printed in 2008. From pages, #4and #13. On page #6 it says self adjusting feature not available on all sizes. When I checked them as stated they did need adjusting and it was easy with a slotted screw driver, maybe check the manual or phone dexter to see what you have. The last thing anyone wants is brakes not working as they should. After what I read and found I will still be adjusting mine every season.
