Bought a 2008 GMC 2500 diesel. It has a 37 gallon auxiliary diesel fuel tank in the bed. Is this ok to leave empty or should I keep the tank full of diesel fuel? The tank has an automatic transfer system to the main tank as needed.

We camp every 12 days for 3 days. So the truck does more sitting then towing by far.

Thank you!

Leaving any fuel tank partially empty, without draining it all and making sure it is dry, will encourage condesation. BAD, BAD, BAD. I would fill it up and place the correct additive to 'keep it fresh' for as long as you can. Maybe you could make an argument to camp more because of the gas. I think I'll try that one on the DW.

So I guess my next question would be what type of diesel fuel additive would people recommend? Thank you.

I have been using Sea Foam for years in all my stored fuel. (gas and diesel) It claims to stabilize for twice as long as Stabul and is supposed to remove water and clean injectors too. It has worked for me, Hank ( Warm weather can promote the growth of organics in the fuel which may become a concern also)

My 2010 Duramax LMM 3500 dually does not like additives at all. The last time I used it the truck threw a code and the gauges all went dead for about 100 miles into the next fresh tank. I keep my tank full as much as I can. Maybe ask the Chevy dealer or go to the Duramax forum and ask those guys , I have learned a lot about my truck over there. I have a 56 gallon transferflow under mine.

If you ask 20 diesel drivers you will get 20 different recomendations on additives, from different brands to whether or not using them is benificial...

So for me, yes I use them. Power Service, silver bottle in the summer and white bottle in the winter.

I think moral of question is that; 1 I need to camp more and 2 I need to drive truck more. I'll be working on both.

^^^. That sounds like the perfect solution!
