2012 Sprinter 266RBS. Last week while connected to electric power, and after a couple of showers our hot water heater gas kicked in.
Is this normal? When the water heater cannot keep up electrically, it fires up the gas burner?

It is normal if the switch for gas operation is turned on.

It's normal and actually it's a good thing to turn on your gas switch every so often and let the two work together as it'll give you piece of mind that your gas is working great for when you're without shore power.
When we're camped with shore power we keep the electric on but turn the gas on for showers the heater will recover much faster with both heat sources working than either by themselves.
