Cool mod!

We have generally stuck to having a "charging station". But as kids get older or as the devices multiply, having charging stations distributed around the unit makes sense.

I added one of these to the outlet in the kids bunk room...

I have several of these (well a competitor's version) spread around the 5er...living room, kitchen, bedroom and the storage area on the street side. Never know what needs USB power or charging or where we might be at the time :)

Did you hook into the lights in the bunks? Does it run on 12V. That would make my teenage daughters so happy. We do lots of dry camping here in Alaska so power is always an issue....well maybe I should just let their phones die. :p

Add a couple of these and you're set. No more forgotten cables and you can usually do 2 at a time. All 3 is too much draw.

Robo - thanks again for this great idea! (tx)

Just added 2 in the master bedroom to the lights right above the head cubby shelf. Super easy install, like 10min, and work perfectly!

Any truck stop (or even WallMart) will have dozens of 12v dc to USB adapters ... cigarette lighter or direct wired.

This is what I use in the truck and trailer.

Only thing I found with some of the cheaper versions is that they don't generate enough power, wattage wise, to charge my tablet. Check on the output amps - should be like 2.0+ for a tablet.

The flat screen TV's all have USB ports these days. If the TV is on the port is hot. Just another option...

Running the usb from the lights- I assume the lights need to be on for this...

I'm looking for the same mod, only run off a constantly hot 12v wire, I'm not super electrically savvy but can usually figure things out- would you be able to run this mod off the light switch wire before it hits the switch???

Actually mine only work when the light is switched off. Kinda weird but I didn't investigate further. I plug the phone in at night - no lights on then.

Thread revival. Worked great with iPhone 5s. Upgraded to iPhone 6+ and now when I plug in to charge the light comes on just faintly (even though the switch is off). Great!

Apparently it's putting too much voltage into the phone so it is redirecting to the light or something?

It is very unlikely that the Iphone 6 is drawing too much power. The USB connectors are finicky when it comes to Apple products. I would open up the light, and measure the voltage across the lights feed wires before and after plugging in the phone. If the voltage drops more than 1 volt DC when the phone is plugged in, then there is a problem with the ability of the light feed to supply enough current to charge the phone. If the voltage does not drop more than one volt then it is an issue with the phone and how it uses the USB charge cable.

Silly question will the USP power ports draw power all the time because they are turning 12 volt to 5 volt?????

They may draw 1 or 2 milliamps of current (basically nothing) in the idle state (not charging) but most likely nothing.

Here is an alterative solution....

Thanks I figured it must be something just to be there

If you really looking for power for all you devices, look no further than this type of new wall plate - I've got one for my RV, and with the 6 regular 110v outlets, you can plug in like 4 power adapters, and also you get 2 USB ports. Sounds like overkill, but if you and the DW have a phone, and each as a tablet, and also a WiFi hotspot, you need at least 5 plugs, so it goes quick.

The chargers that you show are great for every day use, but in my case I wanted to be able charge when dry camping or pulling the trailer and the 12 volt DC units are great for that.

I just installed 12v cigarette lighter receptacles (currently from ceiling light wires) and have USB charger inserts and multipliers for electronic devices. This way, there is no current draw until I plug in.

Installed this for a few dollars off amazon. 2 usb ports(2 amperage ratings
) and 12v port. Now easily charge ipad, phones, 2way radios, fan and powers my cell booster. important to install an inline fuse. Best mod so far. while i was at it installed volt meter as well. both a door entrance for easy access and viewing

It sounds to me like you have the USB outlet in series with the the bulb, did you connect it across the switch?

If so, the new phone pulls enough current through the bulb to make it lite up where the old phone did not. Either way, there will be a voltage drop and current limit through the bulb, you should find a hot wire and a ground to connect the USB port to.

Our 22RBPR was fairly light on AC outlets so I added a couple more and the duplex outlets I installed each had 2 USB power outlets, with 3.6 amps of capacity.

I also replaced the 110 outlets by the bed with the duplex outlets from Home Depot. Much less frustration not having to remember charging bricks.
