I picked up the Alpine from the dealer for some service work today. I was heading to the tire shop to have four new Maxxis installed when the passenger front tire blew on the freeway. There does not appear to be much damage from what I could see. Goodbye to the original Towmax tire!

If only it could have lasted a few more miles...

After 45 years of driving & probably close to a million miles, I had the first blowout of my life yesterday - a Road King Tow (Blow) Max. We would have gladly paid a few hundred dollars more for the RV to have had decent American made tires installed by the factory.

I have been meticulous about keeping the the Blowmax's inflated to 80 psi & cruising at or below the 65 mph speed rating. The tires are 2 years old and have about 5000 miles on them. Pretty lame.

Yesterday was the first day of a 2 month, 5000 mile trip. I'm done with these p.o.s. tires. What would you replace them with?

Bill,

This has been discussed many time on here. If you do a search or go to the tires, tires, tires section you will probably find more info than you care to read through. For a quick summary, a lot will depend on your tires size and weight rating, but Maxxis and Carlisle seem to be the popular answer. A few other tires have received some good words as well (not the tow max).

As bsmith0404 said it really depends on the size of the tires you currently have, how much weight your RV really is (loaded), how much clearance you have in the wheel wells, what RIMs you have on your RV, etc . . .

If you are riding on D load rated tires you can probably find a nice E load rated replacement. If you are on E load rated tires now . . . well then it gets a little more difficult. We need a little more info from you to help spell out the options.

Tires are Power King Tow Max 235/80/R16 Load Range E

My plan is to upgrade to the Carlisle Radial Trail RH load range F. My rims will handle the extra PSI rating of the tire. I would consider the Maxsis too but they don't make a load range F, or if they do it is a closely guarded secret.

Same "blow Max" tires I started with. Been through several E load range tires. Forget that, had enough of it. I moved to the Sailun's (G load range). If they will fit in your wells I would recommend them.

Thanks to everyone for your replys to my tire inquiries, I appreciate it.

Had 5 new LT235/85R16 Michelin LTX's installed at Discount Tire in Bend, OR yesterday afternoon. Much more substantial tire than the blow max. No wavy sidewalls and no 65mph speed rating.

The crew @ Discount was very professional and efficient. Tires were $206/each. With mount, balance, stems, free replacement coverage, etc came to just over $1200.

I've attached some photos.

Happy trails,

Based on your trailer’s axle ratings (GAWR, ea = 6750#) here are your options as I see them. All may require new rims to support the increased load capacity/air pressure requirements.

You can increase your load capacity with ST 235/85R16E (3640# @ 80 psi). Or ST235/85R16F (3960# @ 95 psi)

You can change tire designs and use LT tires approved for trailer service. The most popular are the LT235/85R16G (3750# @ 110 psi). Some are steel cased, they are the most expensive and are mostly made in the USA. Others are polyester/steel and have numerous manufacturers both USA and foreign made.

Then there is the big step to the 17.5” rim diameters where you will find satisfactory load capacities from LRF to LRH. They will mostly be designed for low platform trailer service and will have speed restrictions from 62 MPH to 75 MPH. They will be very compatible in overall diameter and rim width for axle fitments and fitting into the wheelwell.
