Has anyone had any issues with certain motor oil in their towing rigs? I have not, but am more curious than anything else.(tx)

Didn't like Motorcraft's 10w30 in our 6.7L. Switched to 5 w40 Shell Rotella T6 synthetic. Motor is quieter and, probably just me, but it seems to run cooler and smoother.

I'm a big fan of AMSOIL. I use to run Shell Rotella T and never had any problems. I also get a oil sample analyzed every other oil change, but I go 15,000 miles on oil changes and just change the oil filter every 5000 miles. I also run 2 oil filters

My thoughts too on quieter engine but I changed to T6 at the same time I started using a diesel additive (on vehicle acquisition) I think they both quieted things down.

I'm a Mobile 1 fan for gas engines. For my diesel I run Delvac, have never had an issue. My dad used to run Rotella in his truck, but has switched to Delvac. I can't say anything bad about other oils since I haven't used anything other than Mobil for 20+ years.

The key is using an oil that meets the manufacturers specification. Never recall ever having an oil related problem and currently use the Motorcraft 5w-20 specified for my truck

I have used Schaeffer 9000 full synthetic oil for 10 years now in everything from a small pressure washer up to the semi trucks and heavy equipment we have, we buy it by the 55 gallon drums and a very good price, love it...."bouncey:

I just use the plan ole Rottella in the duramax. I'm my litttle commuter car, if it's cheap and says oil on the bottle in goes in. In 187k miles not a problem. Did the same on my other car and not a problem in 255k miles.

RottellaT and Fleet Guard filters have been good to me for over 20 years .. haven't seen any reason to change yet.

Being retired from Shell, I use the products. I'm using Rotella T-6 5w-40 synthetic and Motorcraft filters in the Ford diesel. The Ford manual says if you are towing you should use 5w-40. The only oil I have seen in that viscosity is synthetic.
Be careful with Ford dealers. They will put 10w-30 in the diesel by default. My dealer didn't even ask if I used the truck towing. I can't imagine anyone that has a 1 ton truck just to drive to work and back.
I wouldn't want to try a warranty claim with a manufacturer doing 15,000 oil change intervals. Although I personally think it would be OK using a pure synthetic if you are doing oil analysis'.

I hear ya, but I voided the warranty on my truck 2 weeks after I purchased it, same as my new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. I make my own bio-diesel at home so there's a few parts on the stock engines that need to fall off so I can run higher concentrates of my home bio brew

My new 6.4 hemi 2500 requires oil that meets Chrysler MS-12633 specification. Aside from MOPAR brand.....Pennzoil Ultra is the only aftermarket oil that meets that standard...... Weird. Apparently it is specifically developed for the SRT motor group.

Amsoil for me. When I had a gasser (5.7 Hemi) I installed a bypass system. Changed the oil and main filter every 20K and the secondary filter every 40K.

Oil and filters (oil and both fuel) are changed at 15K or 500 hrs on my CTD. Per recommendations from Amsoil, I will not be extending that.

I am gonna make the switch to synthetic, I talked to dealer today and said I can bring my own oil in not a problem. Now, can I just switch or is there a process from going from reg oil to synthetic? What weight synthetic to I get? Summer time temps around here are 100's. I have been running BG Product additives for awhile, can I still with synthetic oil?

You would use the same weight synthetic as you would dino oil for your temperature ranges.

I've never experienced a problem when switching from dino to syn in a vehicle I bought. Things only got cleaner from then on.

Sorry, can't help you with the BG. :)

We have the hemi (5.7?) in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I use Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 in it. No problems. Only place I can find it is WalMart.

I just did the 22,000 mile oil change in the Ford yesterday. I brought my oil to the dealer. They changed the oil for $11 labor. But the total bill was $310. All filters changed and tires rotated. Ouch.

I have not. But then, I subscribe to the 'preventive maintenance' principle. I have used Amsoil since the late '70's when the car I had (Honda) required a valve adjustment every 10,000 miles. Every time I pulled the valve cover off, things just kept getting cleaner and cleaner.

You're probably out of warranty, so it's your choice. I would go with what Chevy recommends. But there are some new choices since 2008.
I don't think you would go wrong with Shell Rotella, Chevron, or Mobil1. I believe 5w-40 covers all bases....cold starts as well as higher temps. All are readily available if you need a quart or a oil change while on the road.

I had one of these on my 1500. When it comes time to change the oil in my 3500, I'll be getting the same style.

I bought the oil in gallon jugs. Kept the empties and drained the used oil into them at the next change. Eliminated the need for the oil pan and lot cleaner job. :)

Yeah, I had one of those on my F-150. Nice and clean and no wrench needed. However, there is a big difference in draining 6 quarts versus draining 13 quarts. Those things drain very very slowly. Sure they are clean and I guess if you have all day for it to drain then by all means go for it!

The 1500 was a 7 qt system. With the Bi-pass that made it a little over 8. Sure it took longer to drain, but with not having to drain the oil out of the pan and into containers and then cleaning up the mess, I figured the time was a wash.

It's an insurance policy .... My opinion it's worth the little extra cost!

Due to the new 6.4l HEMI in my truck, I can only use certain synthetic oil. MOPAR has a product and Pennzoil makes one as well. That's it.... There are no other options, at least as of yet anyway. More info: http://www.pennzoil.com/press/new-pennzoil-ultra-0w-40-designed-for-all-srt-vehicles/

I think Pennzoil makes a 0W-60 for Europe. May be factory fill in Ferrari's. That would be interesting in a U.S. performance car.
