Looking to buy tires for my ram 2500. Don't know much about tires but I think the one's I have aren't very good and I'm concerned about towing safety. Reading it should be load E, 121 or better. Looking at Michelin and Goodyear. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Not really a recommendation, but I'm replacing my Michelin A/T2 tires with the same. They are LR E/124, and came new with the truck. Checked prices on the equivalent Goodyear and others, and you pay about the same. Have had excellent service with the Michelin tires, good wear, handling, traction.

After trying many different brands over the years I'm sold on Michelin's, excellent handling and wear. I won't own anything else. After seeing mine, my dad had also switched to them, he had NEVER owned Michelins before. I had LTX A/T 2's, but switched to LTX M/S 2's just because I didn't need the aggressive tread and all of the sling from the A/T. My tires are 265/70R17E1 both the A/T and M/S are 121R W. I don't run tires below 6/32, but still got 45k miles out of them. If you run them down closer to the wear bars you can plan on 60-70k. Have heard of some people getting 90k out of them.

I checked what's on tow vehicle. I have Michelin 265/70R17 121/118R LTX /AX load range E. lot of tread left but sidewalls have crackle marks (like they're cracking). Should we change them?

Did you buy and install new Michelins? If so, are they cracking and you are considering replacing them already? (You are asking if you should "change them")

Yeah, asking if I should change them. these are the one's I think I should replace. When I initially posted my inquiry I didn't know the type of tire that I had (have) on the truck. It wasn't until I started reading similar inquiries about tires on this site that got me wondering if I had the right tires.

Just a reminder ;) There was a Michelin RECALL last fall... http://keystonerv.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14893
As a result, some of the Michelin's are still s-l-o-w-l-y arriving (& difficult to find) in some areas.

Check the manufacture date (google how to check the codes on the sidewall for your tire). I'm guessing the marks you are talking about are near the bead, tires do that a lot, doesn't mean they are bad, part of breaking down and drying out. If your tires are over 5 yrs old, I would change them. The weathering over time does break down the integrity of the tire.

BTW, if you use silicone based tire dressings, stop. The silicone dries out the rubber and causes the tire to break down quicker. Tires do need to have a dressing/lotion applied to help them retain the oils/moisture in the rubber called antiozonants. You need to find a quality water based tire dressing that helps to condition the tires without depleting the antiozonants which protect the tires from cracking.

I've run Michelin 245/75R16E LTX MS2 tires since I bought the truck in 1998, was on third set. Always had good service from them until the last set I replaced. They were about 5 years old (time to replace anyways), ~22K miles, and had the sidewall cracking/crazing. Tires had a six year materials/workmans
hip/mileage warranty. Took it into Discount Tire, they said it looked OK. I told them I was worried about a sidewall blowout since I run both a 5th and a camper. They ended up giving me a prorated deal, replacing four tires for $560 including mounting and tax (normally ~$950). I saw in another forum where a guy claimed that Michelin had switched one of their tire ingredients for a "greener" formulation that resulted in more of the sidewall cracking. I would recommend checking with your tire dealer to see what they will do for you.

Most major tire manufacturers warranty packages can be found on the WWW. Things to look for in the warranty information is under the heading "What is not covered." Under that heading for Michelin tires is this statement, "Cosmetic ozone or weather cracking."
