trailer length when registering

When campgrounds ask for the length of the trailer when registering, are they asking for the overall length including a frame or just the cabin length?

I have been assuming it is the overall length including a frame but thought I would ask.

I give them tip to tip of the travel trailer.
I'll give them the overall if they ask.
I want "easy" parking.......

Mine is 35', I always say 40' or 45'....

Many people "fudge" a little on length to get a spot that's easier to get into. There's a recent thread on the forum concerning chocks and blocking the stabilizers. One member commented that he has a 35' trailer and all the "long spots" were taken by people with 25' trailers leaving him with only a "short spot" for his longer RV. All the other spots were already filled and several "short RV's" were in spots much longer than they needed.

One can argue that "we want the most for our money" or "first come first served" or any other comment that justifies the action, but when we are "doing it" to a fellow RV'er, are we really being "good neighbors" when we have a 25' trailer and if asked for our length, to "fudge" when it may mean someone else can't get a suitable spot? I'm not thinking of the owner who has a 27' trailer and says he has a 30' one, I'm talking about the guy with the 25 footer who says he has a 35' or 40' trailer......

No need to answer or justify what you do based on this post, I'm just commenting on how sometimes what we think is "just helping ourselves" can really impact our fellow camper more than we might realize......

I've been a little confused about this, too. When they ask for length, they mean just the trailer, right? Not the truck?

I wasn't thinking about getting a longer site, I was wondering about how to describe the length as many provincial and national parks sort the available sites based on length so depending on the length they won't let you book some shorter sites even if you think you can get into them.

rschad- I would say measure from hitch to back bumper. That way you know the trailer at least will fit.

With my outback 250RS, I used to tell them 33', even though the trailer tip to tip was only 29. I found at times that I was crammed in with rear slide out depending on the terrain of the site. With the new Fuzion I've just been telling them it's 38' (it is). We don't have the patio option, so for a normal campground, the rear door won't need to be down. If we were going somewhere that I would need to door down, I'd likely tell them we were closer to 40-42. In the Fuzion, I'm more concerned with telling them the height and the 'slides on each side', because some of the sites we've been in were not very wide.

I don't think you can win the trailer length and site length game. When we had a 25' trailer and were honest when making reservations, we got sites better suited for a pop up. Our current 35' seems to put us into a larger site class, so it is less of a problem.

There are a couple of people who have recently ordered (or had delivered) trailers with rear patio options or with slide out beds in the rear wall (or even the front wall). When making reservations for that type of RV, don't forget to include the additional extended length when registering. It's not very convenient when you get backed into a spot and realize the tongue or the bed will overhang into the street if you park so you can extend the rear bed slideout.
