Shore Power Cable Lock

So our new rig has a twist lock 50 AMP power cable. At $400+ to replace is there anything out there that will help prevent it from walking away. I know if someone wants it bad enough they will have it. I just don't want to make it easy to steal.

I had that plus a surge protector plus a 30 amp adapter I was worried might come up missing. I got a long length of 1/8" steel cable and fashioned a locking system using steel cable crimping blocks and small padlocks. A bolt cutter could probably defeat my system but I figured most thieves are opportunists and are looking to snatch and grab.

Most if not all power post boxes at camp sites have a latch where you can put a pad lock. This locks the hinged door shut and the male end of the power cable can not be unpluged. Yes if they really want it they can cut the cable near the power post while it is energized :eek:

If you only want to secure the cable, this is the way to go. If you've a surge protector and/or adapter of some kind, you need to make something like mentioned earlier. There are a couple locking box-like thingies available, but I believe they're just plastic.

I would recommend driving one of the trailer wheels over the cord. It would be difficult to take the cord without cutting it or moving the trailer.

I would worry about mashing the wires inside the shroud at some point in time doing this. That is a lot of weight on the cord over a prolonged time.

I suppose I would too, however I have never camped somewhere that I was concerned about my power cord walking away. If I was concerned, I would in a pinch wedge the cord under the closest tire.
I figure than if someone wanted the copper bad enough, they would just cut it anyway.

While the thought of someone stealing a power cord is not very pleasant, the cost to replace it doesn't have to be as painful as $400.

I can lock my power box to protect the portable surge protector and also lock the surge protector to the power cable.

The power cable is locked to the TV inside the front storage compartment where it is plugged into a second power transfer switch.

That's a lot of time spent to steal my power cord.

Maybe someone might catch the culprit?

Here's what I use for my $400 surge protector and cable. I have three of them to attach to campground electric post. Obviously a bolt cutter will defeat it...but your occasional low integrity piece of dung criminal won't bother....

I purchased it at Camping World for about $15.

It's very hard plastic. It can be broken, but someone would work hard and make a lot of noise.

My surge protector is hardwired and I have never worried about someone taking the power cable, I'm not going to start now.
