Do I really need a new Pin Box?

Just picked up the new 5th wheel Laredo 335tg, and on the way home had the back and forth tugging I have read about. Is this because the trailer was unloaded? Maybe with it loaded with all our stuff it will be any different or do I need to get a Mor/ryde setup that I have read about. Just trying to figure this out because the first trip is to Myrtle Beach and its a 12 hour ride would like it not to do this the whole way

I do plan on getting a set of air bags on the truck, I think it would be fine but the truck is leveled so when I hook camper up it squats a little.

Did you check all the tire pressures, trailer and truck? That trailer should pull real nice with your tow vehicle. The "chucking" that you are experiencing, the front to rear jerking, will not get better with additional loading. We have the Mor ryde king pin and it makes a big difference compared to an old 25 ft 5th wheel we had before. We also have the Mor ryde unit that is between the axles that also makes for a better ride. It's too bad that you haven't camped a day in the new rig and already are needing to make changes.

I think you will find that once you load the fiver you will be just fine. I've pulled fivers for years and years and just never found a need for Mor/ryd or anything else when the trailer was properly loaded. If you have enough weight on the hitch you won't have chucking. Period. I'd sure give it a try before I put more money into it.

When our 5th wheel jaws would get sloppy like that on our semi's our mechanics would adjust them, I would assume you would be able to on an rv as well

Did you have any water in the FW tank? If it was only partly full it could have been sloshing.
Do you have good shocks on the TV and 5er.

I have no chucking problem with my rig. I have a standard pin box and inexpensive Reese Pro Series hitch. I think once you are loaded it may improve.

As usual it sounds like many different experiences being expressed. Mine chucked too much for us even properly loaded. Pulled with the OEM pin box for a year and then swapped it out for a Mor/ryde and it made a big difference for us. Air bags and leveling the truck, although a good idea anyway, isn't going to stop the chucking, Some people have a higher level of tolerance for what you feel driving along. I have a couple RV buddies who never complain with their stock boxes and a couple who needed to go to an aftermarket setup. Not all used Mor/ryde but that works for us and is reasonably priced and a DIY installation.

The more I tow the more I notice the Chucking. You might be able to acclimate to these forces better than others but for me I had to buy a Trailair Tri-Glide. I haven't installed it yet but can't wait to get it installed and take it down the road for a test.

We experienced some mild 'chucking' with our lightweight (10070 lb) 5er. We were able to greatly reduce this by leveling the nose of the trailer by moving the hitch down one set of holes and the pin box up one set of holes while still maintaining about 8" of clearance. We still get some chucking when encountering uneven bridge approaches (like on I-40). As posted earlier, make sure everything on your hitch is tight and get your rig as level as you can, and I agree that adding weight to the pin will also help. Good luck:)

Thanks for all the replays it greatly appreciated. The camper is brand new only drove it home from the dealer totally empty. The hitch is brand new as well its a Reese 15 k slider. I did notice it is totally dry no grease at all on the pin or plate would this have any affect other then unnecessary friction?

If you haven't already, purchase and install an inexpensive Teflon disk that slips onto the underside of the pin. This disk eliminates pin box to hitch plate friction and the need for grease on the hitch plate. I do recommend that you place a small amount of grease on the pin itself (not much, just enough to coat it). I think in my case that the Teflon disk helps minimize any play that can cause the chucking noise or clunking.

Do you have the plastic disc on your pin? If not, you need to either get one or lube the turntable. Almost everyone prefers the plastic disc to greasing the hitch. As for greasing the components in the hitch assembly, the jaws need to be greased as does the pin mating surface on the trailer pin. Your hitch owner's manual should give you specific instructions on what and how to grease the hitch. If you didn't have the 1/4" plastic disc on the pin, that may well be the source of a significant part of your chucking.

No Grease or Teflon plate, I will be ordering the plate sounds like the way to go. I am going to get it as loaded as possible and get it to a flat parking lot and make sure the trailer in level as well.

I picked ours up two days ago and the chucking is horrible. I ordered a Reese airborne 16k, hope it helps.

We have the TH in my sig...it's pretty heavy. First time towing like to have beat us up:(. The dry pin weight is pretty heavy as well. It was a little nose-low so I adjusted the hitch so it's rides fairly level...having three axels, this makes a huge difference in the quality of the ride, especially for items in the garage. I installed a Mor/ryde pin box and air bags on the truck to assist in the leveling and ride and I must say these improvements really have made difference. Still some chucking but not near as bad:).

I went to a Reese Fifth Airborne not long after purchasing our Laredo. I really didn't like the "chucking". Maybe all the other solutions will work, maybe not. The new pin box was my solution. Good luck, and happy camping!

Our 5er came with a trail-air pin box , trail-air suspension ,Added the curt Q20 with rubber mounted plate ,air bags . When crossing railroad tracks I need look back to see if the trailer is still there because you don't feel them at all. Definitely wold go with the same set up with next unit.

Teflon disk and a Mor-Ryde system is the way to go. When I bought my 2014 Laredo 329RE, I had it installed with a Pullright Superglide and a Mor-Ryde pin box. What a difference over my old setup. I can turn on a dime and no chucking. In my case I do not need a teflon disk as my plate no longer turns with the Pullright Superglide. The combination of the two has made my 5th wheel experience so much more pleasurable. I have a 6.5 ft short box.

Old setup was a standard kingpin box and a Reese 16k slider hitch. What a pain in the butt the slider was. Had to keep it perfectly clean or it would never slide. Even then it was finiky.
