Colorado Campgrounds

Merry Christmas Everyone....

We're wanting to spend the summer out in Colorado and looking for nice campgrounds as a base to travel from once we get there to tour the state. Any information on the campgrounds you've stayed at would be a big help..Looking to stay for about 3 months total in a couple of different campgrounds.

we've stayed at Dakota Ridge in Golden, Colorado several times and would recommend them as a nice place to stay.

We love the Durango KOA. However, it's not centrally located - on the southwest side but near a lot of really great attractions, and, of course, in a beautiful location.

Colorado is one of the places that I really want to take the time to visit and soak it all in.:)

I'm not sure how much you plan to explore away from the Denver area. We lived in Denver for 4 years when I was in the Air Force. If I were to spend a summer in Colorado, I think I'd spend the first 2-3 weeks around the Fort Collins area and explore from there, then move south to Denver/Lakewood area for the next 2-3 weeks, then on down toward Pueblo for the next 2-3weeks.

All of that is on the "front range" and doesn't include the "western half" of Colorado. I'd probably move from Pueblo to Durango for 2-3 weeks, then up toward Grand Junction or east toward Eagle/Vail/Brekenridge for 2-3 weeks and then up to Steamboat Springs for the next leg and leave from there headed back home with maybe a "major detour" up to Yellowstone for a week and then head home through the "northern states" via I-90 and then in Madison, WS, make the decision whether to head south through Chicago or continue northeast and up through the Michigan UP and down through Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia and back home.

Ambitious? Yeah, you betcha, but a trip to always remember !!!!!

A cooler summer alternative might be to stay at the (newer) KOA at the top of the central city parkway. It's good road, just steep, getting in and out.

Keep in mind it's heavily patrolled for speeders!!!

Otherwise it's a beautiful place at a cooler, higher elevation. But if you're not used to higher elevations be aware it does take a day or two to get used to it!! LOL

2 years ago when I first spent a winter in N.M. I stopped here in Loveland,
Co. Some of the site are a tad close but it feeds you right into RMNP.
When I stayed there it was dog friendly, Didn't see the dog run when I checked
the site http://www.rvloveland.com/ so, if you have a furry critter,
other than the DH, I'd call or email to find out. There are a few more
in Loveland, I just don't have any experience with them.

We like to camp without hook ups and we went to Gunnison National Park, in Gunnison, CO as our friends lived in Montrose amd we visited for a while.

It was beautiful there. Just starting to snow and it was awesome.

There are lots of great ones. Here are a few of our favorites:

Golden Eagle, Colorado Springs
4 Seasons, Buena Vista
Winding River, Grand Lake
Ridgeway State Park, Near Ouray
Elk Meadow, Estes Park $$$
KOA (Lake Side?), Fort Collins

there is the city of golden's park which is right on the creek. you can stay there two weeks.

and then near there there is the fairgrounds.

Colorado has soooo much to offer! We have a real love for the Estes Park area and RMNP...i like the idea from another poster to hang for a couple weeks and then move on.

Colorado Springs
Gunnison - Taylor Reservoir
Pueblo

If you want to get in the back country and away from the crowds, you may check this one out:

Stagecoach Park, just south of Steamboat Springs is very good. Cherry Creek State Park in Denver/Aurora is very good as well. And since they're both state parks, the nightly fee is very affordable - ~25/night or so IIRC.
