Be careful hooking up or....

We recently ran a wreck involving a camper. No injuries, but great potential.
The owner allowed someone else to hook up the rig, didn't check it before leaving home and the outcome follows!
Please be careful out there!

sway bar not tightened?

One side was in link 1, the other link 5.
The bottom bolts at the frame were pulled loose because the wood was rotten.

What was the attributed cause of the accident and were there any contributing factors such as wind, rain, etc?

Highway charged too fast for conditions. It was light rain, a light breeze and a smooth, fairly straight road.

Letting someone else hook me up makes me nervous. My wife offers to help, but I keep her away from the hitch area simply because I feel better if I do it all. She gets to help with all other areas.

When I go fishing with my buddies they are always willing to help hook up my rig. But I always , very nicely , turn down the help. I explain to them that if anything were to happen when I`m pulling my rig that I didn`t hook up, I`d be held liable, not them. So I kindly say thank you but no thanks, I can manage to hook up myself. Besides that I have my regular routine when hooking up and unhooking my rig.

I hear ya about having your routine when hooking up. I hate being chatted at while I'm hooking. The fewer distractions, the better. And don't interrupt me with things like, 'could you go get this or that out of the storage or out of the trailer?' One time I got interrupted during hitching and nearly forgot to put the hairpin in the pin that secures the hitch to the receiver :eek:

I use a checklist, so that the kids and DW can help without forgetting anything. There is a bit of overhead in using it, but it gives us flexibility in that anyone can do it if I'm not there (which has happened a few times).

I do one better, I have been known to go out of my way to NOT unhook at a campground, I usually can configure my rig so I can stay hooked up.

My buddies always razz me because I did not unhook, My answer has always been and will always be, "one less chance for a problem". Even though I check and double check my biggest fear is a disconnect of my fifth wheel.

Let the razzing fly but I ONLY unhook when I have no other option, I don't even unhook it in the garage, back the whole thing in hooked up.

Come to think of it I should probably unhook it seeing as it is -10 degree's and snowing, might need the 4x4 by spring (:-)

A few times I've actually felt guilty for refusing help while hooking up. I have a routine, if someone tries to help it actually takes me longer to get hooked up. I can appreciate the offers but I know how I want it done and when.

Couple times back I was taking my trailer out of storage and the storage facility owner walked over to help be back up to the hitch. He then lowered the trailer, and we got to BSing about whatever. I almost got in the truck and drove away...no chains hooked up, no electrical cord plugged in. It was a good lesson in not getting side tracked and going through the steps myself so I don't miss one.

The DW and I hook the TT together. Two sets of eyes better than one. Then if she ever needs to hook up and I'm not there she knows how to do it.
