I'm looking through my manual and can't find what size socket I need to remove the anode rod on my Suburban water heater. Anyone know what size... is it universal?

1 and 1/16 inch and make sure you use a long breaker bar they can be pretty stubborn due to rust. :banghead: I have the same heater in my cougar 322QBS

I change mine yearly for the few dollars they cost.
BUT I always use teflon tape.

X4 on the 11/16 socket. I just wish I didn't have such a tough time threading the little bugger back in :( . Darn near bit my tongue off this time around :CF:

Cheers!

OK, y'all have confused me. I was told that the size was 1 1/4". In one post above it says 1 1/16" another post says 11/16". What size do I need?

1-1/16 I had to go to an auto parts store to get it. The local Home Depot and Lowes did not carry this size.

I believe the 11/16 posted was just missing the - between the 11: 11/16 = 1-1/16

If you're still not sure just bring the anode to the store with you and check it there. Thats what I did.

Mike,
The weight/length of the anode makes it difficult to align the threads. Try pushing in on the plug with your thumb while you turn the plug or use a shorter socket with which you can apply inward pressure while you turn the plug:)

HI THERE. They are 1&1/16 inch. 1&1/4 inch will realy make you:mad:when you round off the head:banghead: so it is 1 1/16 or 32mm for you metric fans:D

Mike,
I place a small piece of paper towel in the socket it helps when pushing it in. The head doesn't move in the socket

OK All! I am truly apologetic for the 11/16th size thing - a small case of cerebral flatulence on my part. I did, in fact mean 1-1/16.

The above suggestions for aligning the anode rod head/threads to get the thing lined up are excellent and I will try these ideas out in about two weeks when we get resettled at the Big River RV park in California.

Cheers!

Thanks all for the replies. 1 & 1/16 was right... for any non believers ;)
Another question...
Do you leave the plug out over winter or do you screw it back in?

I screw it back in. I've had issues with corrosion on the threads with other types of water containers when plugs are removed and don't want to chance it with the water heater.
