Propane tank holding straps on 5ver

I've had numerous issues with the propane tank holding straps formerly on my cougar 5ver and now on my Montana 2955. The design of the band and clasp holding each of the 30 pound tanks is poor and after many changes the clasps work less and less satisfactory. There should be a better solution and I am looking for it.

One of the clasps "got bent out of shape" and I couldn't seem to fix it so I have gone to using plastic zip ties to secure and tighten the band. It works but not as convenient but then again how often do you need to remove and replace the propane tank?

I had one strap fail last year. The strap broke at the stress riser where the screw is placed thru the strap to hold it to the frame. I used a bungee cord to hold the tank in place. I marked the bottom plate to see if the tank moved with the cord in place no movement, so I now use bungee cords on both tanks to keep them in place. Just a different idea to hold them in so you do not need to cut zip-ties to remove the tanks.

Having an issue much like this, except the straps are very tight, non-adjustable and can only be popped open using a flat blade screwdriver. Closing it... that's a different issue all together. I was looking for an adjustable steel strap(s) and unable to come up with anything searching the web. The link above this provides a very expensive option for a 20Lb tank, I need it for 30Lb tanks. Any newer knowledge on this?

This is a 9 year old thread. As far as your straps for the 30lb. tanks I had the same issue on this trailer when I bought it. I took it back under warranty. Pulled into the side of the bay, guy came out with driver and new straps, pulled the old ones off and put new ones on that FIT. Maybe 10 minutes, never unhitched and drove away. Don't know the specs on the straps but there are some differences obviously.

20 and 30 pound propane tanks are the same diameter, 12.5". The 30 pound tank is 6" taller is the only significant difference. Holding straps for either tank will fit the other.

Several people around here have had problems with the steel straps and have simply gone to nylon tie-down strap type solutions. Some just built a bracket, mounted it to the rear wall, threaded a ratchet tie down strap through the bracket and use that.

There are several commercial "nylon strap devices" designed specifically for propane tanks. Here are links to a couple on Amazon. Almost every RV parts department will have replacement "OEM" type straps and most will have the newer type as well.

Danny- thanks, yes I knew it was an old thread, but it was best suited for my question. Rather just handle it myself instead of dealing with the dealer and their impressive delays on service. I figured if I can replace the equalizers and a/c's and such, four straps would be easy enough. :)

John- thanks. I thought about some nylon straps but since I've only see steel straps or hold-downs, I didn't think nylon straps were acceptable to RV standards and highway use. The Hengs in your links is the same as what's on there now, 2 per cylinder.
After this storm passes tonight I'll dig in more with the nylon options.

Also, when they replaced my strap I doubt they had one with a different length, the tech however did drill the screws into new places which probably gave me more length. Just a thought.

The storm (landfall) is far enough south of us and we'll only see some trees down, fences down, and power outages. My brother lost everything in Ian on Pine Island (St James City), they had just bought it in July as a winter home (snowbirds).

That video is a great idea. I have a some of those spacers, and enough flat washers to also build up a side. I'll try that first. Thanks.

Our rig came with only one strap per cylinder and we had one of the clasps break some years ago. I purchased one of the Hengs 90032 straps on Amazon and it was the perfect replacement, seems even better than the original.

Man, those all look a little sus. I suppose it really doesnt take much to hold em in place though. You use any? They seem to work ok??

Danny - 4 Four #8 standard flat washers stacked up behind the strap at one of two anchor points, a slightly longer screw and all is well. Thanks for the link to that you tube video, I didn't even think of that. I don't normally search you tube.
