I was wondering if anyone runs there 15000 btu A/C with the shore power only hooked up to a 15 amp plugin? Can that cause damage to the A/C unit?

Shouldn't be a problem unless it draws more than 15amp or the line voltage drops below 110-106volts. A digital voltmeter is a nice thing to have to help monitor the voltage in the trailer. A progressive surge gaurd is nice too. But a much more expensive option.

Hi Jumpy,

Two issues. First a 15000 AC pulls between 16 and 17 amps (full load). So you may see the breaker to your 15 amp outlet trip occasionally. That not good for the AC, but if it doesn't trip too often...

Second, voltage drop. If you use a standard extension cord, you will get a lot of voltage drop. That is hard on the AC. If you gotta do it, use a heavy duty extension cord. At least 12 gauge.

Generally not something you want to do a lot of.

I can run mine off a 20amp circuit with 15 feet of 12 guage extention cord between the outlet and the shore power cord.
I dont do this all the time, just when it's nasty hot and I'm working on something in the trailer.
I could not get it to run on a 15amp circuit without poping the breaker.

If voltage INSIDE the RV with the A/C running is at least 110 VAC, no problem. If it is under that, you may well damage your A/C.

Does anyone know what kind of damage can be done to the AC if run under a low voltage. My son ran his off a faulty generator over the weekend. It doesn't cool. I changed the thermostat yesterday and checked all fuses and breakers with no luck. Took the lid off on top and all is clean up there. The fan works. Don't know where to look next. It's a Coleman-Mach.

I have run my AC down at 108 volts without damage during heavy demand times. As voltage drops it must be compensated for with amperage which builds heat and can also damage electrical plugs and cords. A 15amp circuit is not going to do well for the AC. You will be flipping that breaker a lot.

No, it doesn't seem as though the compressor is coming on.

It is hard to diagnose with just posts, but I would guess the compressor is bad. Probably time to go to the dealer.

No. Compressor doesn't even try to kick on. You can't even hear a draw on the electrical system.
