How long should you flush the black tank?

I usually drain, hook up flush, close drain valve, run flush for 4 minutes (timed), drain tank, close valve, fill again for 4 minutes with flush, drain, leave valve open and run until clear, close valve and add water via flush so I leave with around 5-10 gals in tank and tank is ready for next trip. I only use this method if at sewer site or no one is waiting behind me at dump station.
This works well for me and I never use chemicals or have odors.

I do a less rigorous method similar to therink's. just don't wander off while the flush is on and the drain is closed.

I have a clear plastic elbow between hose and outlet. When output runs pretty clear, I'm done.

I also use a plastic clear connection and use to watch until water would run fairly clear. I found out that this method would leave debris still in the tank. I now empt the tank and then while the black tank is being flushed, I will fill a bucket with water and dump this down the toilet.

My wife is the one who will do the dumping of water in the toilet. She usually dumps between 5 and 6 buckets down the toilet while I empty and flush the tank watching for debris in the water to run clear. By the 6 bucket the tank is cleaned. One my reasons for full hook up site not holding others up at the dump station as I dump the waste.

I flush it until I'm satisfied that it's clean to my standard.
How long you choose to flush yours is up to you ...
Each is different and each dump/flush cycle is different.

If you don't fill & flush until there's only clear liquid coming out then you'll know soon enough by the smell in the bathroom.

A couple of you mention running the flush with the drain valve closed. I was told this was a no-no. Specifically, I was told I could end up with black water coming out of the roof vent.

I have a clear connector right at the dump and just flush until the water coming out looks mostly clean. Then drain the galley and the shower.

In the printed "instructions" I received with the black tank flush mechanism, it issues a caution saying to leave the drain OPEN when back flushing.

Keystone and other manufacturers place that disclaimer in there as there are
folks that get distracted and end up with some nasty 'stuff' rolling off their
roof. Dumping is not something you want to do as part of a multi-task event.
This is one time to listen to what Dad said and "Do one thing, do it well, finish
it then and only then move onto the next job." One tends to achieve much
better results that way.

I'll dump the black and then run the flush 2-3 times.. I also close the valve to allow the tank to partially fill.. I think this helps as the first refill almost looks like the first dump!:eek: Just stick to the task at hand and it will go smooth...

I open the valve, when about empty, i fill a wine glass half full. Cap it off with Merlot. Offer it to my next arrogant camp neighbor. If he says" man, this tastes like crap", guess needs more flushing!! "bouncey:

Gotta admit, I'm scared to try this.

Normally I'm brave, but I don't want **** on me :)

Just do it ... Don't do anything else BUT pay attention to what the job at hand
is. Use your watch or the stopwatch function in your phone. Close the valve,
allow it to fill for 3 or 4 minutes pull the handle and let'er flush. Repeat until
you are satisfied with the results... Easy-peasy :D. Just don't wander off and
start something else while you do this chore.

It sounds risky, but it's Keystone's way of "C.Y.A.".
If you simply run the black tank flush with the black dump valve open you'll never fill the tank with cleaner water, rinsing off the sensors which is every bit as important as not walking away while flushing. I fill mine until the tank level has been 2/3 and approaches full, then I walk briskly around and shut off the water, then dump, and repeat as neccessary.
If you don't keep those tank sensors happy they will getcha!
