We took our first trip in our new 5th wheel this last weekend. My old 5th wheel was a 99 and 25' and around 7500. Towing the old tt we got 5.6 mpg (that hurt). Towing the new one which is much bigger and heaver we got 11 mpg. What a differance. "bouncey:

I take it fifth wheels pull better than travel trailers?

Better? That depends a lot on the equipment being used. A travel trailer being towed by an appropriately matched tow vehicle with a properly set up hitch system with sway control and the correct percentage of hitch weight will tow about the same as a properly matched and loaded fifth wheel and truck.

Both have advantages, both have disadvantages, so it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. In recent years there have been advancements in truck comfort and passenger convenience. Not too many years ago, the only way to buy a pick up truck was with "plastic" seats (and there was only one seat), standard transmission and steel door liners/overhead liner. You could forget air conditioning and the only available radio was an AM "knob turner"

Many people (back then) chose to tow with Suburban's because they had enough room for the family and had pretty much a "car interior". That mandated travel trailer use as a fifth wheel couldn't be towed. Now that crew cab and super cab trucks are available with most options available in any vehicle, more people are choosing trucks as tow vehicles.

As to what tows better? It really depends on the equipment being used. Properly matched, both tow really well. Mismatch the rigs and both can be a nightmare to operate.
