updating rearend from 3.5 to 3.93-how much will it help??

I am thinking of putting a 3.93 rear in my F150 from a 3.55. How much will this boost my tow capacity if at all. any thoughts???

Your official tow capacity? None. Your actual towing capacity, maybe a little more than none, depending on what your problem is. If you are within the manufacturer's tow ratings but need a little more power then the ratio change will help a little, but that's about it.

Thanks for the reply!! I am within the manufactueres tow rating but at the high end of my limits! I was thinking this would be a good soultion since I can't afford a new truck and a new trailer and the rear would only be about $1000-1500.!!

New rear end gears will help a lot but I would go with something closer to 4.30s if you can. I don't know what the rest of your truck has but if it has a 6-speed tranny you won't loose much on the top end (MPGs). Just going from 3.55 to 3.93 won't help much. Not worth the money IMHO.

There will be some noticeable difference IMO in starts from a dead stop but 4.10 or 4.30 would make a bigger difference and keep you higher in the RPM range at speed making the truck more responsive and result in less downshifting of the tranny.

I know next to nothing about rear end gearsThey will fit but you need to find out what gears are actually offered for the rear end in your truck. They may not be exactly 4.30 but something close.

Keep in mind of you have a 4x4 truck you will have to regear the front diff as well if you plan on using the 4x4 function of your truck. So be sure to factor that cost as well.

The 4X4 does make it a double whammy and if your truck has the 5.4L, which wasn't a powerhouse to begin with, the net gain is going to be negligible. I would sock that money back towards the down payment on your next truck.

On my 2012 Ram 1500 with 3.55 gears my tow rating is 8500. If it came factory with 3.94 gears it would have been 10500.

Live with the truck and save the $1000 for a down payment on another truck. The gear change will give a little more pulling power, but you will have spent $1000 on a 1/2 ton truck and still have a 1/2 ton truck with all of it's shortcomings and you aren't going to change any of the capacities.
