Just curious which states, like PA, require annual inspection for travel trailers.

Texas requires an inspection yearly and will place an ugly inspection sticker on the front port side. However, it does not seem like Texas enforces inspection on trailer RVs as they do motorized vehicles including motorized RVs. It seems as though the inspection certificate is just needed to obtain the license tag and registration. I don't know of anyone who goes past the first year getting a trailer RV inspected. However, the inspection is pretty minor - it's the same thing one does before pulling out of the campground, stop lights, left blinker, right blinker, running lights.

North Carolina does not require an inspection on the RV unless its motorized.
BUT we pay for tags(license plates) and taxes on the rigs about two months after you purchase your tags from the DMV. You will get a statement from the your local county government and you pay the taxes. if you dont pay, your tags are blocked at the DMV until you pay the taxes.
I have vanity plates(NC State Parks tag) on the camper so I pay an extra $30.00 along with my regular license plate fee.

New York does require annual inspection. All they check is tires, all lights working, brakes grab ok, and they eyeball the hitch.

Well here in connecticut. the rule is Buy it Drive it.your welcome to kill anyone you want on the road. no inspections ever unless it comes in from out of state or over 10 years old. that's why we have so many lawyers here:rofl:

Here in Ohio there is no inspection of anything at any time. Well, some of the counties where the bigger cities are such as Dayton, C'bus and Cincy, require exhaust checks. On rare occasions you see the state troopers doing random car inspections along the highway. Been driving for 25 years, can't say I have ever been thru one of those. Other than that, it is run what you brung here in Ohio.

Wisconsin does not require inspections, they just send a license renewal notice every year.

In West Virgina No Inspection is required on travel trailers or fifth wheels. I just bought a new Toy Hauler in Pa and spent about two hours at the DMV. One thing nice thou I was aloud to transfer my plates from my old travel trailer which weighed around 8K. My new TH weighs in around 14K and it cost 5 bucks"bouncey:

Me bad! I haven't had a PA. Inspection done on mine since I bought it over 2 years ago. I check lights every time I hook up. I check the brakes and do the bearings every year so I know they are ok. I think the charge is ridiculous for the inspection. I know the consequences of getting caught is higher and it's probably a matter of time I get busted.

To me the annual inspection of trailers is just another form of taxation on the people of that state.

I have enough taxation now without more being added.

Michigan has no inspection and for trailers you only have to buy one permanent license plate for the life of your trailer.

Here in New Jersey where they inspect and tax everything, they don't inspect trailers. I sure hope the politicians in Trenton don't read this forum or they will create and privatize another agency. :banghead:

hankpage, Howdy;

Then they'd have to re-design the entry to the inspection huts as well
as the pathway to the fix-it shop and the exit for the trailers to be able
to manouver safely thru them... :)

In Texas, all you need to get tags every year is proof of insurance, on your motor vehicle, not the trailer, same as getting your truck tag.
I get mine inspected every year. It's only $14.50 for the inspection and that tag saying the lights and brakes work, may turn out to be a good defense some day. At any rate, it's a cheap price to pay to be compliant and not have some over zealous cop that's having a bad day hassle you.

Hello fellow Texan! Is registration (tags) needed (after only one year) for a year old travel trailer? I have gotten it inspected, yet have never received any state info on tags for it. I know when purchasing a new car, you don't have to get tags for two years. I was just wondering on TT's. Thanks.

If you bought from a dealer the registration & inspection should have been done by them & should receive your tags in 3 to 5 weeks either from the dealer or mailed to you.
If purchased from a private seller you'll have to get it inspected & go to the county clerks office to register it, proof of insurance also required.
Since this thread began 5+ years ago Texas has changed the requirement for trailer inspections, they must be done annually within 90 days of the registration due date, if out of state they will allow registration without inspection, but must be done as soon as re-entering the state.

Here in the People's Republic of Maryland the only inspection for anything on the road is when it changes hands. The tags here are good for two years and our trailer tag (a sticker that goes on the tag actually) is $160, potholes, ruts and road shrapnel is free.

This year they have added a weight limit, anything under 7500 pound GVW is exempt from inspections.

I took my trailer in this year, with out actually looking at the notice of renewal from the DMV and the guy at the inspection station told me no inspection required.

When I got mine inspected last August, they mentioned that I didn't have to next year.

Is that trailers only? Or trucks also? My truck is diesel so it only requires the safety inspection (lights, wipers, horn), gas requires the emissions testing with the safety inspection (at least in metropolitan areas). Last year the guy said they were considering doing away with the inspections all together.

Interesting thing about Virginia inspection....I was recently heading south with an expired inspection and stopped at an inspection station near I95 to remedy the situation but was told that a new requirement was the station had to be able to get the entire trailer inside the bay!
To confirm I went to another station and was told the same thing, I finally found a station that inspected and repaired semi’s that could pull the fiver inside the bay!

When I had my house in San Tan Valley AZ vehicle inspections were not required because we were in rural AZ. Never know it by the amount of traffic along Hunt hwy.

Connecticut has "roadside" casual inspection based on cause. 40 years hauling, never been stopped. Commercial trucks use weight scales, and front to back, but still rare, not full time!

Don't know about now, but Maryland used to scale and sideline RVs and 5ers / goosenecks, even when marked "NOT FOR HIRE"

Prince George County was infamous... even a dually with no tow had to scale, and was subject to inspection, and reg check. The State Patrol training barracks was right down the road, and was manned 24 by 7!

Yep Danny they hammer you on new vehicles and Rvs , boat trailers and utility trailer are not bad at all. We still buy the tag on the fifth wheel we gave the daughter it`s a 2009 model and it is 40ish and my son`s first truck which is a 2002 chevy z71 and it is 40 something. I am hoping the tag on the 2017 trailer will drop below 200 next year lol.

Our renewal tag for our RV is $30 per year, whew.

I was more bummed out by the insurance cost for the new RV.

No inspection either, and no inspection on the truck either. There use to be a requirement for pickup truck inspections, but that was dropped about 10+ years ago. Definitely happy about that.

Truck license renewal is $110, if I remember right, and does require proof of insurance.

Land of Lincoln is our home state - at least until some politician decides to tax my pension and SS.

I've had the same issue from a couple of "auto" inspection stations who wouldnt inspect it. My local RV dealer just requires that I pull it on their lot, right where they refill propane btw which is convenient . They have bays large enough but never been in them.

MS had an ad valorem tax, and I suspect they still do. When we moved to MS almost 30 years ago, our fairly plain-vanilla new 1989 Chevy Astro Van's tag was over $600 that first year. The cost went down each year - I think it was around $100 when we moved to LA in 1998, and then the tag dropped to something quite low.
