Portable Generators

Hello,

How do you keep your portable generator secured when using it to recharge batteries and other uses, i.e. during the evening when sleeping at an overnight stop where there is no electricity (for the AC)?

By secure, I am guessing you mean antitheft? If so, we've got a 3' bicycle cable that I loop through the handle on the generator and then around something substantial like a tree or one of the landing gear. Then padlock it up for the night.

When we are on the road, I usually hide it under a plastic tote in the bed of the truck so that it stays dry and invisible.

I installed a ToyLok on the frame of the rig and route it's cable thru the handles and back them a heafty Master Lock. But I have never left them out over night, always put them back in the TV in bed Tool Box

Put a cable or chain with a good padlock on it secured to the trailer or truck.....don't invite some low life to steal it!

We use a MasterLock Python Cable Lock. (Beefy bicycle cable lock) Either secure it to the bed of the truck through one of the tie downs, or to the bumper of the trailer. Either place, we run the cable through the framework of the generator. It's secured that way when in use and during the time we're in the campsite. If we leave, or at night when not being used, back in the bed of the truck, locked to the tie down, with the trifold bed cover closed... Out of sight/out of mind !!!

I have a massive cable and lock (motorcycle type setup) I’ve used for computer equipment that I’m thinking of reallocating to my generator. Are generator thieves mere opportunists, or do they go around with bolt cutters and/or saws? And if someone walks off with your locked (or unlocked) generator, what insurance would cover that?

Secure

Agree with all.... yes, can't see in pics, but we use plastic covered cables and locks. Jeez, must have like 6 of those cables around and many locks... heck, I even cable the bbq to the front post of the trailer, genset is cabled to the back bumper around one of the pole handles. Only theft problem we have had in years was some teens into my beer at Myrtle Beach! Now we use an auto light that's placed under the steps into the trailer, anyone walks near the trailer and the light goes on!
