Anderson Ultimate Hitch

I finally ditched my slider, so I could have a truck bed again. I got an Anderson ultimate hitch that goes in my B&W gooseneck mount. It obviously has the offset, and I’ve mounted the adapter forward for more clearance. I also bought the ball hitch that gives another 4” offset back from the bed receiver. Has anyone else experienced this set up, towing w the weight set back from the axle that far, is it fine? I’m able to do complete turns in my short bed just making sure it’s fine to pull down the road.

Don't know that I follow your description. The hitch itself goes in the bed and the ball on top of the hitch is oriented toward the tailgate. The kingpin adapter cup can be rotated to either the forward or backward position....are these the connections you're referencing? My adapter cup faces forward which pushes the trailer back.

As a rule, the kingpin is designed to ride 1-2” forward of the rear axle.

How far behind the centerline of the axle is the kingpin?

I have that set up. But the ball that slides into the B&W system also has a plate that puts that ball 4” back, before I put the hitch on it

The ball sits 4inches back, then the Anderson sits on that putting the top ball four more inches. Then I have the kingpin adapter for the ultimate hitch facing forward

If I’m following you correctly; your BW ball is back a few inches like the attached pic?

If so I would swap that out for a regular ball that lines up center to the axle. Then install the hitch like described above.

I’m going to assume that’s probably not a good idea. Get a regular ball for the gooseneck, or Andersen hitch shaft which is what I run.

Here is link.

Get a straight ball B&W ball mount or the shaft that Matty Rich referenced. I have used the B&W ball and have had zero issues. The offset ball you have along with the other adaptations is going to cause you problems.

What problems do you think it may cause? I’m just trying to be able to have more of a turn radius….

What kind of turn radius are you trying to get? I have a Ram 3500 and I get approx. 85 degrees or so with the setup as depicted in the video. At the angle I get I would never try to push the trailer because all you're doing is scrubbing the tires off the wheels. As some point you're going to have the pin taking out the tailgate.

I did a complete 90 degree turn in my driveway with this set up. Cleared the back window by a couple of inches and never hit the side rails

Is your goal turning radius? Based on your original question you asked is it okay to tow with that much of the weight off set from the axle. And generally speaking, no it’s definitely not ideal. I would not. Your previous slider hitch only slides back when you need clearance, imagine towing with your slider all the way back.

Sourdough mentioned as well. You should have plenty of clearance with the proper setup.

You didn’t mention your trailer. What’s your pin weight?

Yes my goal is turning radius…. My camper 308BHDS is like 9,800# dry so not sure what that pin weight is…. It’s mainly just turning in my driveway I would use the slider, but I HATED how heavy it was to get in and out of the bed, I just gave up on having a truck bed full time. Do those gen-y pin box’s give more turning radius. I realize having the standard bed isn’t ideal, but I love this truck and hate the prices of changing trucks these days…

Look for the trailer GVWR and multiply that by .23 and you’ll be close enough.

Based on the gross weight (11700 lbs) of your trailer a guestimate is around 2700 pin weight fully loaded. I would use this weight as a minimum for safety reasons until you get the trailer scaled. (as Chuck said, 23 percent of gross weight).

If you have to turn full 90 degree turns frequently I wouldn't worry about the hitch or truck cab - you need to be replacing tires about every 3rd-4th turn pushing those tires sideways. Have you watched what those tires are doing when you're pushing them 90 degrees? They're not rolling.

So, basically stop obsessing w a 90 degree turn, use that hitch how it’s intended and be happy?
