Is there a way to ...

Admin's, Howdy

Is there a way to eliminate the gifs that run automatically? Yea, I know,
some folks think they are funny, I do for some, BUT, and I capped the BUT
for a reason. The reason being those gifs and other Auto run stuff eats up
a persons allotment of bites when on a "Plan" and receiving their internet
via some sort of devise that plucks it from the air instead of through wires.
Overage fees are not cheap and those auto run features are hungry wee
beasties.

Thanks for considering my request, talk amongst yourselves please. At the
least perhaps install a stop & go button so we can start and stop it ourselves.

You should be able to make that change on your computer if you're using Internet Explorer as the browser. Go to the upper right corner of the screen, you'll see a "gear" shaped button, click that, select "internet options" and click on that. It will open in a separate window. Along the top are tabs. go to "ADVANCED" click that tab, scroll down to "Multimedia" unclick on "Play animations in webpages" and unclick on "show pictures". Then click "APPLY" on the bottom of that window, then click "OK" and the window will close.

With that done, open a forum webpage and you should get the basic page with no pictures in the headers (except the top forum logo), no "smileys" and no pictures within the posts or in signatures.

If you're not using Internet Explorer, your browser should also support these settings, but you'll have to do some searching to learn how to make the changes.

Hope this helps, we're also limited with data usage. "They" say we're getting a fiber-optic system this coming summer. The "woods" in northern Michigan are 10 years behind the rest of the world when it comes to "electronic access". When we moved here in 2009, there was nothing but satellite or dial-up internet access, no cell phone coverage and no cable TV. It was like taking a "step back in time" when we left all that behind. In the past 2 years we finally have cell phone coverage with Verizon and sometimes with AT&T, but none of the others. Still no basic cable service for anything, and no "high speed" telephone internet access (still only dialup). Sometimes there's a price to pay for no sirens at night, no streetlights, no paved roads, no neighbors, no plowed roads in winter....... Hmmmm

Along the same line of "Excessive Data"...

Why do some members feel the need to "Quote" the entire reply directly above their response? We can all follow a simple train of thought. I can understand occasionally referring to an earlier post, but in MHO, it is getting really cluttered, and out of hand.

Just my 2 cents...

JRTJH, Howdy;

When you say ;
"With that done, open a forum webpage and you should get the basic page
with no pictures in the headers (except the top forum logo), no "smileys"
and no pictures within the posts or in signatures "

I'm not asking to eliminate the rest of the photos nor the "smileys", just
the gifs and other auto run stuff that eats bites from a persons "plan".
It feels like someone is just reaching into my pocket and taking money
without asking ... because that is basically what is happening. Someone,
the poster of gif is walking into my computer, not asking to use my bites but
just making themselves comfortable like a Goldielocks and helping
themselves to something that isn't theirs.

I don't know of any way to "have your cake and eat it too".... It's either everyone will have GIF capability or nobody has GIF capability. There's no way in the forum software to personalize what is downloaded onto your computer or change the way you view the forum pages. That is done within your web browser, not in the forum software.

Sorry I can't give you the answers you're looking for. I don't think it's possible...

Pull Toy -
Members can easily reduce the "verbiage" by simply deleting portions of the post being quoted. Often, there are only one or two sentences within the post that you want to emphasize or comment on so you are right - it isn't really necessary to quote the entire post. Your suggestion would reduce the "clutter" and make reading less overwhelming.

As you know, many threads veer off topic and can in fact go all over the place. As a thread goes from "here to there" it is helpful for me, and all members, to understand what the poster is replying to. Many don't do that and you spend a lot of time trying to read everything and figuring out how the post applies. Many times the previous posts quoted may be a few hundred words long.....good, it helps us understand what's going on. And, I have no problem reading lots of words... I read at about 400 wpm so a long post is "nothing" to me, and I think most folks appreciate the info.

There are some thread display options in your accounts settings here: https://www.keystoneforums.com/forum...do=editoptions

You can disable display of images in threads, signatures and a few other things. be sure to scroll down and hit save after making changes.

Janet H. Howdy;

Thanks for the link. Top of the second page is what (some what), I was
looking for. Perhaps a conversation with the keepers of the keys to the
programmer's to see if they might design a button to start/stop the gif's
and other auto run bite thieves might be possible. I'm probably not the
only person that gets irritated by them.

This isn't currently an option but I've passed it along.

Hank, when you're surfing the net how do you stop all the ads that load automatically through your travels? Those ads take way more data than a few gifs or smiles on this site. I see where you're coming from, Brenda and I pay by the month for our data package also, but I don't believe much here makes a significant difference.

That is the reason I suggested disabling photos/JPG's and GIF's in the browser. It won't much matter if you stop downloading a picture in the signature blocks on threads that you read on this forum if you're still downloading all the photos, GIF's and opening all the windows in your email program, at the Camping World site when you look for a new sewer hose and then check to see how much the same hose costs on Amazon.... Unless you stop all (or most) of the downloads onto each page throughout your surfing, this site with its very limited bandwidth use won't have enough impact to make it worthwhile to just restrict photos here.

To each his own, but the data usage on this site to read the average posts on a daily basis is really insignificant compared to surfing the pages on 4 or 5 sewer hoses on CW or Amazon.

Am I the only one that finds humor in the animated gif in the signature of the guy that wants to stop animated gifs?

Sorry, don't mind me.

I stumbled across u-block https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UBlock_Origin
it filters out a YUGGGE amount of ads and other 'stuff' that seals your bites.
Works for me, you may or may not care for it. It's one of those personal kinda
things.

You got me there, but it's the only one that truly expresses my overall frustrations
about dealing with the infernal interweb. How could I not entertain it's usage?
