Question U-shaped Dinette

We have an "older" style dinette (seating across from each other) and we want to upgrade to the new "U-shaped" dinette. I can build it but do not know the dimentions of the new ones.

Could someone measure theirs (or from research) and provide them for me.

Many thanks

Fred

I can’t get you measurements at the moment because my Passport is in storage, but I am not sure you can achieve what you are thinking.

In a U-shaped dinette, the rectangular table is situated with the long sides running front to back, where your dinette table runs side to side and is up against the wall. In other words, one dinette is wide and shallow and the other is narrow and deep.

Here's a close up I happened to have of mine. I have since had all the cushions recovered.

My table is very wobbly. I think the "cup" and legs are worn and need to be replaced.

Also the under seat storage is awkward to access. I plan to cut openings on the end faces and put cupboard doors on them.

Unfortunately, if it's worn, it's now too late. But, when traveling, remove the table from the legs and put the table in the down (bed) position so the movement of the trailer in motion will not cause the legs and the bowl support on the floor to wear any more from the movement of the table when traveling.

In order to tighten everything up without getting all new supports and legs, simply use a piece of old bicycle inner tube, cut it, and lay it aside the leg inside the cup. Do this on both the floor and under the table connection point. The table will stiffen up. Just be sure to lower the table when traveling again or it will continue to wear even more.

Good luck!

Thanks. I tried putting duck tape around the leg at the crimps but that didn't really work. I also tried bending the crimps out to make it tighter, that didn't help either. One of my support cups is actually cracked.

I think maybe I need to replace all 4 support cups and the two legs.

Perhaps the previous owner travelled with it up and that's why it's so wobbly. I now have it set up at a permanent site so that's not an issue.

If you are looking for parts to repair your dinette table, I recommend reaching out to Pleasure Land RV Surplus Store in for you nearby Brainerd, MN.

I have used them for furnishings.

Something to think about. My camper had a dinette like yours. Table hooks to the wall, and has one leg in the middle at the other end.

My brother has a U shaped dinette like you want. Two posts to hold up the table. We are constantly banging out knees on those posts, and its not easy to get all the way around to the back. Think about if this is what you REALLY want before you do the modification.

I will also add that as an owner of a U-shaped dinette, that any pressure on the edge of the table while sitting down or standing up puts enough torque on the plastic post bases that they crack and then the table becomes wobbly.

This is something I'm always trying to be aware of. I may replace the bases and legs or perhaps try drilling a hole right through the legs and put some type of pin in.

Typically we have the kids sit on the back side and adults on the edges so were not leaning on the table getting in and out.

Do they make metal bases (and maybe posts) for another brand of trailer that might work as an alternative?

Maybe something from Brinkley or Airstream???

I have the common metal ones right now with the legs that have crimped ends. One of the bases is cracked and the legs are very loose. Even after putting duck tape around them and bending the crimps out.

There's some replacements I found that are affordable but have plastic bases. Most of the reviews were positive. This was for replacement bases and legs. The legs are metal.

Or for now I try putting a screw or pin through the base into the leg to stabilize it. We rarely use it as a bed. Maybe once once a year.

We also don't move or tow the trailer so it can pretty much stay up always.

Looking for something stronger, look into the same type product, but for boats.
