RV Insurance

Shopping insurance for Home, Auto and RV. I take the declaration page black out the prices, make copies and take it to the local insurance agents so I can get an apples to apples compare. I make sure they know the coverages have to be the same or better and the deductibles the same or lower. But anyway here is my question that I am looking for wisdom on.

My RV policy has been with Nationwide Insurance since we got an RV 9 years ago. While shopping polices I decided to do the RV also. I now have a price for the RV from Progressive that is around $200 a year cheaper for the same coverages and deductibles. I have never had a claim with Nationwide so I don't know how they are on with them. Is there any reason not to switch to the Progressive and save some $$$$? Pro/Cons of each company and experiences are welcome.

RSL, Geico has been our insurance company of choice for the bike, trucks, cars and RV's for almost 46 years. Never the first moment of grief. Latest ordeal with the AC's being ripped from the roof: Geico paid $17K and got their money back from the other company. AND I got my $1,000 back.

I've not had either company but I do know with my clean driving record that Progressive was almost 3 times as high as other companies for my motorcycle ins.
For the RV in my sig, I'm paying just under $650 a year for 250-500 policy with $5K extra coverage for contents and includes towing through American Family.

I'm paying $178 every 6 months at State Farm for $250 deductible collision, comprehensive and road service.

When we bought our Springdale in 2010 Progressive was about $300 less than all the rest. We bought Progressive and when the tree fell on that trailer, they settled the claim in less than a week (dealer delays in the estimate) so I have no complaints with their claims process. It was actually "painless" and the adjuster kept us in the loop through the entire process. He actually went out of his way to make sure everything was included so we didn't have any losses that we didn't include in the claim.

We still have Progressive and like all other insurance companies, the prices have creeped up slightly every year. We do the "comparison shopping" every year and have not yet found another company with lower prices. We're in Michigan, one of the highest insurance premium states, (because of our "no fault" laws), so we may not be a good example of "reality states" where insurance rates are typically much lower than here.

I took a tip from corporations I worked for, they shop insurance every year. When I started shopping around I literally cut my insurance bills in half for equal or better coverages. Now with Nationwide for house and auto's, Progressive for the Fifth wheel and Allstate for the Golf Cart.

Bottom Line, I was with one insurance company for over 20 years with very few small clams. They ended up ripping us off for our loyalty to them. Yes it was Allstate.

RV Insurance

Had a claim with Progressive last year for a new rubber roof - that is expensive ! They were fast, efficient, worked with my service dealer, and paid everything but the deductible. I was quite happy . First claim I've had in 9 years of RV'ing, but also the first year on our new Cougar. Gonna get a new camera for my back-up camera system that looks forward and will tell me about overhanging limbs. Much cheaper than another $1000 deductible!

We chose Progressive because they seem to handle RV's better than my State Farm Auto policies, who wanted to treat it as just another vehicle.

We have various insurance companies in different states for different properties depending on pricing etc. but, in TX where our main house is, we use Geico for house, cars and RV. They have been way above average on response for us and cut my home insurance almost in half from State Farm; cars with State Farm; not even close to the Geico rate. Had the blow pop incident with the trailer and they were waiting for me to get back into the dealership to look it over and give an estimate - in 1 hr and cut the check. Their estimate was way, way more than I would have thought; very generous.

I've had Nationwide, Progressive, Allstate, State Farm etc. Geico is head and shoulders above my experiences with the rest.

Hit a submerged "something" with my deck boat; I/O 5.7L. Shredded the prop and tore up the skeg I thought. Service manager at the dealer said the prop shaft is bent as well. Called me a few days later after the Progressive lady came by. She told him the prop was covered but the shaft was OK so he asked me to come up. He had the shaft out and the bend was very obvious. I called her and told her to come down there since I was there. When she got there I asked her if she knew the function of a prop shaft....Yes. Does it have to be straight?.....I think so. What's the definition of straight? Straight? I told her I would give her the definition - "extending or moving uniformly in one direction without a curve or bend". She nodded. I took the prop shaft and just pointed to the obvious bend. I asked, "does that fit the definition of straight"? She was flustered and just said I didn't see that.....it's obviously bent and approved the other costs. Dropped the insurance and moved on. Just sharing that because you never know.

We have had GMAC insurance for years, with two vehicles, and the camper, Until they went crazy with price increase. They were the only ones in our area to offer Full cost replacement of what you insured.. National General Insurance acquired over half of GMAC and changed the name to National General Insurance. We changed to a different insurance company for the vehicles, but kept NGI for the camper.. Haven't had a claim but they still honor our full replacement policy. So we stay with them...

The hardest part about insurance and asking nation wide, each state has a say so what they demand the company's do or do not do. Rates very for several reasons in each state.

This is an excellent point! I think it explains many situations where one company is not so competitive in one area while being the best somewhere else. Insurance regulation, like so many others, is problematic to say the least.
