Backup lights & camera
I have added LED backup lights to the rear bumper of my 2011 Laredo 291TG, connected to a light switch in a rear storage compartment. I also added a Garmin wireless backup camera to the licence plate, power connected to the running lights. I have learned that the 7-pin plug on both the truck and camper have a connection for backup lights, I am going to run a wire from the plug, under the camper to power the lights and camera.
Two questions: what would be a good wire gauge to run and,
do I need diodes to keep power from going in the wrong direction back TO the truck? I would like to keep the lights connected to the power switch so that I can use them as utility lights when not hooked up.

I just wired mine that I put on with 16 gauge wire straight to the back up light connection in the junction box on the trailer. When in reverse they are on. Work great.

Yep, just like the ones I installed. I have a travel trailer, where is the Junction box?

I believe the junction box he is referring to is on the tongue of the trailer, where the 7 point umbilical cord is wired into.

My underside is enclosed also. The junction box on my trailer is on the inside of the tongue near the nose of the trailer. I would assume yours is in a similar location?
An easy way to find it is to follow the 7point umbilical cord to where it terminates.

Yep, that's where it is. Thanks. Used my ohm meter to figure which one it is. Other than the fact it was only single connection. This is great.

Awesome! I’m glad it worked out for you.
That was a good suggestion Kyle McMahon.

I have 18gauge. I will run to home Depot and pick up something heavier. It will power both the backup lights and camera. My project for tomorrow!

Update:. I hooked up 12g wire to the junction box, ran it through a wire cover, and snaked it along the I-beam. I connected it to my backup lights and camera, plugged the pigtail to the truck and put it in reverse. Both the lights and camera kicked on! Next, I will go back under the camper and permanently attach the wire to the I-beam. Thanks for all your help. My 70 year old body is sore from doing all that crawling around under the camper, but I am ticked pink that it all works. Thanks for your help!
