Don't have 12" of snow but 'only' another 5-6 inches worth on the roof of our 5er. We have missed the worst of all three of the Nor'easters, but there has been plenty enough and March has really just begun.

Some positive encouragement for us in the Northeast,, this year (March 12-14) is the 130th anniversary of the Blizzard of 1888 where there was up to 4 feet of snow and drifts up to 40 or more feet tall: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blizzard_of_1888

Inches of snow * 1.25 = pounds per square foot of snow load. Multiply by the square footage of your roof and you'll get an approximate weight of snow on the roof. Of course it depends on the actual weight of the snow.

So for example we have about 16 inches of snow from yesterday's storm. So 16*1.25=20 lbs/square ft. Our trailer is 8*22=176 square ft of roof. So 20*176=3520 pounds of snow!

Got that - but what I’m really curious about is the uniform load rating of our trailer roofs - or “snow load rating”.

Yes, that would be interesting to see if they build these with any snow load design ratings in mind or not. You have to admit that going through the calculation of the snow weight is eye opening though. That's a lot of weight!

I did send an email inquiry to Keystone asking if there was a design snow load on my trailer. I'll post back if they respond.

This is Keystone's response to my inquiry about snow load roof design rating. Nothing but generic mumbo-jumbo.

"Thank you for contacting Keystone RV regarding your Cougar. We do not have a recommend “snow load” weight for the roof of the unit. If you are storing your unit outdoors*during the winter months and there is snow in your area, we recommend keeping it as clear as possible to protect your investment. Thank you and have a great day."

I could't do all that math, so I just leave and go south.

I am 100% positive there was a load rating built into any of our RV roofs. Talking to Keystone customer service is like asking the guy on the corner looking for handouts what kind of water pump you have.....clueless. They do however have engineers, and they are the ones that will know that. You have to be persistent, and use the right "phraseology" to get to them. For us it doesn't matter; I don't take the trailer into snow....that's what condos are for

They know what the roof load specs are. You received "Corporate Speak" and because most of "us" put up with it, they glide out under the door to sell more units.

If you leave all the doors and windows closed and sealed up, youll be fine. If you have a slow leak somewhere or leave your vents open under a vent cover, then you lose internal cabin pressure. The roof integrity is tied directly to how much air you can trap within the unit and MAINTAIN! You should check internal pressure at least every other week and supplement back to at least 80psi with an air compressor. (Make sure of the load rating on your over the stove flapper vent, as some of these are made in China and have been known to blow out)

This is all tongue in cheek for those who take things too seriously. All the flapper vents are made in China and all blow out equally.

Not really an easy conversion number.

Saturated snow weighs up to 20 POUNDS per cubic foot and most probably what someone in the East could be looking at. If you live, say in Colorado or Utah where snow can be feather light, lots less per cubic foot, i.e. 7 pounds/cubic foot while a 'normall' snow is about 15 pound/cubic foot.

A foot of snow on a 30 foot trailer that's 8' wide has a 240 square foot roof.

240 sq ft X 20 lb/cu ft = 7200 pounds of snow and could be on that roof or in other words, a heluva lot of weight.

I can't believe the skepticism about Keystone's response. If Misty the Keystone Retail Advisor says they don't have a design snow load that's good enough for me. [emoji849][emoji38]

And ctbruce the air leaks out of mine as fast as the water leaks in! [emoji6]

But seriously I've never cleared the snow off of any of my RVs over the years and never had any issues. And we've had years where I've been up on the roof of my house when it starts to get 2-3 feet deep because I get worried, but never been worried about the RV.

That's probably the nastiness the long range forecast says may hit us Monday or Tuesday and storm number 4 in 3 weeks. At least my snow blower is fixed

We all just hope that it all dropped it there and wont come East

I thought all Canadians went South in the winter. It sure looks like it every fall and spring on I-87 with the massive parade of RVs from Quebec and further NE Canada. Heck, even Trudeau left town

That's the Easterners that are a bit on the soft side.

And here in the West we don't mention the "T" word.
