Fuzion 417 Winterizing Question: Garage laundry prep

Hi all,

So last year I DID NOT do this, but it got me thinking. Is there any reason I need to winterize the laundry prep in the garage if we have never used it?

I guess what is to stop water from getting to those hoses? Or is opening up the low points and draining those good enough?

Thoughts?

Unless there are valves at the T's where the laundry connection splits away from the hot/cold water lines, then when you pressurize your water system, you'll push water into that plumbing. So, there's probably water in the lines. If (with Keystone who really knows) there is a sag in the line, it may not drain through the low point drains. That could lead to damage from a hard freeze.

So, even if you have never used the lines, chances are better than good that you have water in that plumbing. That water may not clear and you could have damage.

Winterizing isn't really difficult, just connect a hose to the faucet in the laundry center, put the other end of that hose over the drain and turn on the faucet. When it "runs pink", close the faucet and do the other one. That way you'll "know for sure" that the plumbing is protected.

If you're sure you'll "never/ever" connect a washer, you might consider locating those two T's and putting a 1/4 turn valve on each. That way you can eliminate any water into the laundry plumbing and not have to worry about it again. If unsure, just winterize those lines to be sure you have no leaks next spring.....

I did the pump anti-freeze through the unit method last winter and DID open the washer valves into a bucket till red ran out. Then poured some of that back down the drain there as there is a P-trap before it gets to the tank. I think PEX lines are pretty forgiving in the cold but the valves may not be, better to be safe

I didn't winterize mine (forgot I even had them till just now) and didn't have any problems. Temps were in the single digits for a week or 2 straight last winter too.

Yeah, I'll remember those this winter. Is that really a p-trap in back? Mine has never had water through it. Hmmmmm... Not sure I want water in it at this point. There is a cap on it to keep smells out.

Just winterize it like the rest of the RV and then relax. What can it take, three extra minutes?

I wasn't getting huffy or anything. Just questions.

I didn't mean for it to come across as smart-alecky, just short and to the point.
But it is a good idea to include that end of your RV in the winterization project. Simply better safe than sorry.

If it has a cap glued on it I wouldn't remove either. I would just drain the valves into a 5 gal bucket.

Did ours even though we have never opened valves. You just never know that a grand kid or someone will turn them handles and allow water to come that far. You wouldn't know. As stated took me and extra 3 -5 minutes and good peace of mind. Didn't put anything down drain as it hasn't ever been used and still has cap.

I put a short piece of hose on each washer spigot and run it into the Ptrap for same and winterize both the hot and cold lines. In the spring I flush it out as well since I don’t want antifreeze leeching back into the fresh water lines.
