New user in East TN

Hi all! Planning to fulltime starting May 2020. My house goes on the market Saturday, and moving into an apartment as the first step in downsizing and heading towards retirement. Looking at likely the Alpine 3300GR or Montana 3561RL.

Eric, welcome to the forum from Germantown. I believe we have another "esteemed" member from Murv'le…..I'll bet he pops up here shortly!

Hello Eric, and welcome to the forum. I'm not sure about the "esteemed" part that was mentioned in a previous post, but none the less, glad to have you aboard here.

Thanks, Vern! I'm excited about this new phase I'll soon be entering in life. It's going to be about a year before I actually place my order for a 5th wheel, but I've already been researching for quite some time. It gets confusing sometimes, to say the least.

So far, I haven't been able to find that 5er that is 20 feet long and 5,000 pounds while towing, but then pops up to 40' long and 16,000 pounds after being set up. I just know it's got to be out there, somewhere! I did a search online for the George Jetson model, just in case, but it came up empty...

Eric, I'm about 15 months away from retirement.....Jan. 2020 but we aren't going full time...just going to do some travelling. I'll have enough PTO that I'll actually finish working in Nov next year, then use my PTO up and officially retire in Jan, 2020. The other option is to just work till 2020 and take a lump sum payout. Holler if you have any questions about trailers, I'd be glad to answer them if I can.

PS....good luck on finding that "magic camper"......and I definitely want to see it if you find it!

Hi there! I was just mentioning to xrated in a private message that I used to ride a GoldWing, when I lived in South Florida. I looked briefly at a toy hauler and thought about getting a Spyder or a new GoldWing with a trike conversion for better mileage (and fun!!) while not towing, but I came to the conclusion that I didn't want to give up trailer length for the garage. I want to have it all, and it's painful to have to make decisions like that :-)

Decisions, decisions lol. As far as giving up room for a garage, when we get to the campground, the toy comes out and the garage is our dining room.

Interesting. With plenty of room for a laptop or two, it seems, in a dining room that big, so that could be useful. I'll have to look again, more closely. I've got a year until I buy, so plenty of time to research!

I know the feeling. It took us almost a year to decide on a floorplan.

What type conversion do you have on your wing? We have a 2006 Roadsmith and my wife loves it. Also has an AUX fuel tank. We had a Forest River Wildwood toy hauler and took the trike but the rest of the trailer was so miserably bare bones and lacked any storage that my wife and I decided to just buy the current 5ver and I bought one I could pull with my old 96 F250. Most of the toy haulers out there today are way beyond my towing ability and since I am retired with a small business, just can't afford a big ol' 1 ton dually.

We have the Motor Trike Adventurer conversion with independent suspension. I know what you mean about toy haulers. If you get one with decent living space, it's gonna be big.

I know that feeling! My TH is 35' long and if you deduct the 10' of garage space, you end up with a 25' camper. But it's just the two of us and a Toy Manchester Terrier so he basically has his own bedroom!

One of the things I looked for when we were shopping for ours, stay under 40ft. Ours is 38ft 8in. Even at that length we have trouble getting in some of the spots that we used to get into with our other 5er. It seems like over the years that the RVs have grown a lot faster than the campsites!!! The same could be said for trucks and parking spaces!!!

There are definitely some campgrounds that are tight, especially state parks. Many of the state parks were built 40, 50, 60 years ago when a BIG camping trailer was 20-25 ft. Long.

Alpine 2012 owner

1) We love our Alpine. I have one of the best kitchens I've seen in an RV. This was important to us since we do live in it for 3-4 months as snowbirds. We also appreciate the desk for laptop & other paperwork. But, I haven't seen our exact floor plan in an Alpine for the last few years.

2) Ours is 40' & with a long bed, full crew cab pickup we are very long! I would not want to be any longer and we wish we were a couple feet shorter (but not sure what we would be willing to sacrifice to get there). The 40' is very livable.

3) Still looking for that perfect blend of true living in the RV & toy hauler. Last couple of years we've seen them getting closer. If you are OK with a queen bed, take a look at Grand Design Momentum. It has a front living room & back bedroom. The garage is nor full height because it is under the bed. The bed is on hydraulics to provide enough height for a motorcycle. The design only allows for a queen bed, no room for a king - which is a deal breaker for us. Aside from the bed side we really liked the floor plan.
