Which purchase would be better?

Looking to buy a F350 XLT/Lariat dually.
I have narrowed a few down.
Question-
Which would be a better purchase-
a 2016 with higher mileage (60,000 miles) with low price OR
a 2017 with lower mileage (21000 miles) with a higher price?
Price difference is about $8,000 between the two. All in budget.
Carfax looks good too.
Please explain your choice.
Thanks

If they are both Diesel engines I would get the cheaper one. 60,000 miles ISNT high for that engine

I agree with Chuck when it comes to a diesel engine with 60,000 miles. It's "just getting broke in" at that mileage.

That said, as for the rest of the truck, at 60,000 miles on a 2016, all you have left of the OEM warranty is 40,000 miles for internal engine failure and what's left of the 5 year emissions warranty. There may be some means to buy an additional FORD (don't even consider any aftermarket warranty) warranty contract. Depending on the investment you're making, you may want some added coverage.

As for the 2017 with 21,000, if the remainder of the OEM warranty is transferrable, then you'll have 9,000 miles of "bumper to bumper" warranty and nearly 30,000 miles of drive train warranty. Again, depending on the investment costs, not having to absorb the cost of a catastrophic failure may be a deciding factor.

With either truck, I would make sure that whatever warranty is remaining is valid and transferrable.

Keep in mind that there is a significant difference in "optional comfort" between an XLT and a Lariat trim. Some things may not be important to you, other's which are not even available to upgrade may be. As an example, factory navigation is NOT available on the 2016 XLT with the "OEM" electronics. It's an add on upgrade on the Lariat, even if it isn't already on the truck. Then there's leather seats, power passenger seat (adjustable for better comfort for passenger on long towing trips) to name a couple of things.

Personally I would take the 2017 with 21,000 miles, hope it is the Lariat.
We just bought a used 2016 Ram 3500 DRW Laramie, it will be our daily driver as we full time and don’t want a chase vehicle when traveling.

I guess this answers my question as to your plan! Your doing the right thing.

My recommendation is the same as those above for mostly the same reasons. I believe Ford's warranty is 36,000/3 years on everything (let's not get carried away) and 5 year/100,000 on your 6.7.
The XLT is a little more of a work truck and the Lariat has a few more of the "play-pretties."

You are buying miles at $.205/mile, not bad. In my opinion desperation miles would cost about $.25/mile for that truck. The lower mileage vehicle is a better value if they are equally equipped.

Dose the 16 have new rubber? The 17 tires should be about 1/3 to 1/2 used up. I would think a set would destroy a $1000.00 bill. More to think about.

Well for Michelin for other better tires, your looking at $1,200 to 1,600 for a set of six.

I agree with some folks here, i would go after the 2016 with 60000 miles on it. It is just getting broke in, mine just click over the 60000 mile mark. Good luck.

My choice would be the latest model. At 21K brakes, batteries, etc will still give you service life...also less ... maybe tow8ng miles on the 21K truck..

At 60K for the other truck it’s broken in... but how was it used? Brakes could be down to half life...transmission is due fluid and filter change..

Both are gonna be a good choice.. most likely.. and I myself would get the one that has the most creature comforts.. heated leather seats..etc..

Good luck with your purchase and post a few pics of the new truck when you make your decision.

The 2017 still has 15,000 miles left for the bumper to bumper warranty. Less wear and tear on everything else as well.

Pick the one that has what you want color, interior & options. If the same get the newest one.
Or just go get a Duramax.

Keith, did you go for one of those or are you still looking newer one ton DRW are a rare breed. The one I found that fit my needs was over 300 miles away. It had a higher trim than I was looking for but the price and condition were what I was looking for.

Nothing yet. No rush, still winter here in Pa! Leaning toward Ford because that is what I'm familiar with. Have to take a look at the Rams and Denali.

My hunt lasted a bit more than two months, looked and walked away from a couple. Even after a two or three hour drive, you will know when it is the right one.

I'm assuming these are both 6.7 diesel? (I wouldn't buy an F350 DRW with a gas engine - not sure it's even offered.) The 2017 diesel has a listed torque of 925, the 2016 has listed torque of 860. I think they are both 440 HP. Ford has continued to tweek the engine tuning and/or improve the turbo every since they introduced the 6.7 (in about 2012).

We purchased a used 2017 F350 DRW XLT with 30K miles and absolutely love it. As other have stated, it isn't fancy, but we bought it for capability! Our GCWR is over 27K and it pulls like a dream. It will go just about any speed you want (and are willing to feed it).

I don't think you can go wrong with either rig.

One more thing to consider is the ‘17 may have a much larger fuel tank. If I remember right the ‘16 I had came with a 36 gallon tank and the ‘17 came with the 48 gallon tank. I think the ‘17 was the year of the new aluminum body if that matter to you.

The only thing not discussed so far is that the 2017 6.7 had some major mod's made versus the '16 and earlier 6.7 engines, to add hp and torque. I'm not a big fan of "Newer is always better", until the jury is in.

Anyone have reliability stat's on the newer 6.7 vs the older style 6.7?

Good Luck,
