Not sure if its a big deal or not but the 6/4 SOOW cable I'm finding from several manufacturers is only rated for 45 amps. So with that being said, how often could a person exceed the 45 amp cable rating when powering your RV??

Your 6/4 cord is actually rated at 55amps. There are only two current carrying conductors in the cord as the conductor that is used to carry an unbalanced current from the other conductors is not considered to be a current carrying conductor. This unbalance conductor is the white neutral wire. Hope this helps.

Well maybe but according to this site ( https://www.wireandcableyourway.com/8-AWG-2-AWG-SOOW/), 6/4 SOOW cable is rated 45 amps/leg.
Then since we have gotten so far afield from the OP question, I have to add to his question, viability as fr as availability and how much it will cost. First of all, not every available wire supplier has this in his normal stock and you may need to add a shipping charge. Then there is that cost for at least a 50 foot run. The noted above supplier has UL rated at $3.40/foot. Next you need to add a Marinco or similar twist on female connector, another $75-100 bucks and male end at another $20 or so bucks for decent (not CAMCO) quality.
Would I make it shorter then 50 feet? No, especially after having sites in the past 3 years we have needed every bit of the 60-70 feet of my collection of either 30 or 50 amp cords. Or park in a poor location on the site.
Nice, but unless you have a real good supply of cheap wire and connectors, not much of a good way to economize as well as ease of cable storage.
But, as the old saying goes, to each his own

Check out this website and look at the amperage ratings for 6/4......and you will see that it is 55 amps if there are two current carrying conductors. Now look at the very bottom of the list table and you'll see the verbiage about the conductor that carries unbalanced current not considered to be on of the conductors.....it's footnote one.

Well I certainly didn't know enough about it to argue so I called a couple electrical shops here and they conferred with you xrated that it is in fact capable of the 55amps due to the fact its only 120v cord. As for pricing I've found the cord locally for $2.85ft being the best price so far, still have to look for the plugs.

Just make sure that it has some sort of real and recognized safety certification, not just more Chinese crapola as even the one seller I found had one version with no cert at $2.85

Not sure if I'm going to pull the trigger on this yet or not, I need the twist lock plug for the RV plus the male plug and the wiring. I can see prices getting close to $250 for a 50ft cord...not sure if its worth it for me. I'm thinking once I start traveling I just need to stay where its warm so existing cord won't be so hard to roll up!!

Went and looked at the SOOW cable the local supplier has for sale at $2.85 per ft tax included. Just wondering, those that have used this SOOW cable and put the plugs on it, do they fit and clamp ok because the 6/4 SOOW cable I was looking at made by Southwire looks to be a bit smaller diameter than my stock cord. So, just wanting to make sure they will tighten up ok on the smaller cable.

50 amp power cord storage
I bought a feed tub from Tractor Supply that was just about the right dimensions to coil up the cord inside. It's heavy duty, so I can stack other items on top. Also good for TV cables. I think the link is for the same item.
That said, it's still a hassle to deal with in cold or wet weather, and another heavy thing to tote back and forth to storage at the front of the trailer. It's kind of ridiculous the mfr didn't design more conveniently located storage. I SURE WOULD like to have something located close to the receptacle on the rear of the trailer that would enable winding it up and closing the door!

Russ,
Tinner asked that question in 2017 and hasn't been on the forum since July, last year.
