New Member and New Montana 3820FK
Hi All,
So we are really excited and should receive our new Montana 3820FK in just over 2 weeks. It will be our second RV, so we can use all the help we can get. So excited to find this form. Our tow truck is a 2013 Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel.
All the Best

Re: New Member and New Montana 3820FK
Welcome. Now let me start the war. You're probably going to be near or over your RAWR. I wouldn't fret being at payload or over a little on 10,000 lb's but your going to be way over i bet.

We looked at that model and it is fantastic. With a 'published' pin weigh of 2810 (actual maybe 3000 or more) loaded I'd be over the payload slightly with my F350 4x4 diesel. W/D and multiple ACs would add quickly. Dry unit weight is about 14,000 which was closing in on my 5er tow capacity too when loaded. We decided to look again at it and others at the Tampa show as at over 40' and 15,000# I'd prefer towing that one with a dually.

Re: New Member and New Montana 3820FK
I didn't think I would be that much over. Payload for my Ram is 2580 and towing is rated at 17,410. And I thought that the second AC in the rear is behind the axles so it would actually reduce the pin weight. Would air bags help?

That is a fantastic 5er. My payload is almost 1000# more than yours and know I'd be over. Add the 5er hitch, anything in the truck, battery, passengers, and 17% of everything in the 5er and payload increases quickly. Bags will help to level but do nothing for increasing the payload. My RAWR would be OK and my tire rating too but unsure your truck numbers. Let us know how it works for you. As that 5er is currently at the top of my wife's list I'm especially curious. I have her considering others but she really likes the front kitchen and anywhere else the appliance weight is not as important.

That's a beautiful fiver and a great floorplan. Congrats! That said, the empty pin weight alone puts you over your payload. My loaded pin weight adds about 400 lbs, figure 200 pounds for the hitch plus 3-400 lbs for two passengers and your pushing 4000 lbs. My listed brochure pin weight is 2200 lbs and all in ready to camp I'm at around 3300 lbs on my truck. I try to stay out of the over weight wars but if it were me I'd for sure want a one ton and most likely a dually, which I have by the way. Enjoy and congrats again!

Re: New Member and New Montana 3820FK
I have the 2016 3820K model and did a 4K trip this last September. My tow vehicle is a 2015 Chevy 2500 HD Duramax and I had airbags installed. It handled very well with the diesel jake brake through the Sierra Mountains on 6% grades. I am very aware that I am at the Max limits for this 40 foot trailer. The airbags are great for slowing down the bouncing affect. The biggest concern was the air pressure and heat on the single rear tires. PSI increased a minimum of 8 PSI but not more than 15 depending on heat factors in the desert. Montana switched the China Bomb tires (at the last RV show) to the #1 or #2 recommended Salium tires for 2017 and that's worth its weight in Gold for piece of mind. Frequently check the Air Pressure on the trailer/truck and maintain a speed of 60 mph and all should be good.

Re: New Member and New Montana 3820FK
At the last RV show they had two versions of the 3820K. The alternate model was with the floor plan flipped to have the Living room up front with the big glass window and kitchen in the middle. Everything else was identical to the original model. Three improvements noted this year; Tires, solid stair steps that go straight up in the doorway and additional vent added to the middle of the trailer. The Buffet seating in the front window is great for looking out over the campgrounds and is a great feature. The buffet design wears on you for the narrowness of the table and refrigerator combo. I would consider a modification if I was a full timer to a standard dining setup for conversion to a bed and extra cupboards. I lost space with the generator in the front.
