West of Denver, CO camping areas
Does Colorado allow overnight camping in their rest areas? If not can anybody suggest some locations near I70? I will be leaving from Kansas City in late Aug or early Sep. I plan on making the stop over on the west side of Denver if possible.

All stays.com says no overnight parking in rest sites.

The answer is no. https://www.codot.gov/travel/state-highway-rest-areas
There are a couple of campgrounds by Golden on the far west edge. I have overnighted at Dakota Ridge and Clear Creek. Both are commercial and tight, but nice enough.
Another option is Idaho Springs just to the west.

Overnighting in a WalMart parking lot is an option. There is a Yahoo Group that lists all the WalMarts and which ones allow overnighting as well as those which do not allow you to stay overnight.
You can find the group here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/walmartrving/info

We stayed at Dakota Ridge a couple of years ago. It's at the foot of Lookout Mountain, just west of Denver. It's a "camping resort" filled with "member units" typically large motorhomes. They "rent the empty spaces" to overnighters/short term campers. It's relatively quiet for as busy as the streets around it seem to be. The sites are very tight and you may not be able to stay hitched if you're only going to be there overnight. Don't expect a "camping" type experience, it's more the "clubhouse crowd" and those who use it as a "base camp' for visiting the Denver/Golden area.

We stayed a week at Prospect Park RV in Wheat Ridge, just off I-70 exit. All sites have water and electric, but some sites don't have sewer. They do have a dump station. Convenient to get to, adjacent to a nice park, and reasonably quiet considering the busy street it is on. They had lots of seasonal campers staying there, too.

The KOA at Silt, CO is a relatively new, very roomy and clean travel park.
We stayed overnight there in 2016 - nice park - nice folks.
