Fuel MPG

You should be able to get at least the 10 that you are looking for. If not then look in to a programmer and maybe an upgrade to your intake system. Or if you don't feel comfortable with playing with a programmer then it would be worth the money to take your rig to a diesel shop that specializes in aftermarket emissions.
I am running a 2000 Ford F-250 superduty 4 door cab long bed pulling a 37' Cougar SRX. I am averaging 15 to 16 mpg pulling it around Oregon and Washington. I have a cold air intake system and a Edge programmer. I run it in the tow mode all the time and it get's me the best overall performance. If you bump it up to the next mode it starts to blow smoke which is just wasted fuel.
If you don't have to take your truck thru annual emissions tests then it is worth it to have your egr and after treatment filter removed. Like I said talk to a local diesel shop, not a dealer to find out what you can do to get the best MPG. Good luck and I hope this may help you out.

for about 1/3 the cost of new. My last RV was a MH and got 7 MPG towing a
4K 2011 Dodge Dakota 4x4. The 5th wheel weights in at about 12K and I hope
for 10 MPG.
Expecting 9-11 MPG while towing is achievable and should be what you see with "normal towing". Towing up mountains or fighting a significant headwind may affect that mileage. Expecting 15-16MPG is something most of us "only wish for" and very VERY few actually see that kind of towing with a large fifth wheel.

You may want to look at a 2015/16 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Double Cab or Crew Cab with Max tow package, 6.2L gas 3.42 axle, 8 speed transmission. It produces 420hp/460lbft torque. 12,000 lbs tow/about 18,000 gross combined weight. It has heavier axles and brakes than standard 1500, extra leaf in rear springs and mine has air lift suspension also. It rides like a 1500 unloaded and a 2500 loaded. I live at 5,000' altitude and have to tow 6% grades to 10,000' Mine does really well.

F150 ecoboost

I have an old 2002 Springdale 27ft. My first TV was a 2001 Yukon and it pulled awful. My next TV was a 2002 GMC Duramax and it pulled good. In 2016 I bought a F150 EcoBoost with the twin turbos and it will pull all day long at 70mph up and down hills with no problems. I did have to install Air Ride air bags because the truck sagged a bit when hooked to trailer. Am very pleased with the way it pulls and rides.

You can get by with the gas engine but don't expect stellar fuel mileage. Our fleet trucks are 2015 Chevy 2500 4x4's equipped with the 420 hp version of the 6.2 along with the 6 speed transmission. Ours have the 3.73 axles. We don't tow with them but these trucks operate on the interstate only and still the best mileage is 11-12 mpg. I personally have worked my way up from gassers to the Ford 6.7 diesel I have now, but until you tow with both you won't realize how effortlessly the newer diesels perform. And just driving it around town I get 14-15 mpg.

Hello E Rod, glad you posted the pics of your rig. Couldn't tell if it was a short bed or long bed truck. I am looking to upgrade my trailer and truck to a F350 short bed and Alpine 3700 5th wheel. 2 questions. If I put in a 5500 lp generator, will it cause the truck to squat in the back?..2nd what about the clearance between the back window of truck and the front of 5th wheel. Thanks for any insight

In answer to the squat question, an additional 2 to 300 pounds won’t be a noticeable difference over the pin weight. And your best bet for a hitch is a good quality auto-slider.

Thanks for adding responses about the mileage for a diesel.

Before I bought my truck I had a lot of people tell me (particularly
RV sales people) oh you only need a 2500 diesel to haul the trailer
your looking at.

Well my answer to that is I like having a bit more braking/suspension
when towing.

Before the MH I had a 2004 Ford 350 diesel (yes I know all about the
problems with the 6.0 motor and I had most of them). It was a 4x4, 4 door, long bed. It towed the travel trailers I owned just fine, no sway and it averaged 10 mpg in California.

After I retired in 2008 I did dealer trades and also hauled freight.
The one ton truck did a decent job of it.

One my new truck I did not want to deal with DEF fluid or a lot of the
problems the newer diesels trucks seem to be having.

Also the 2500 Ram has coil spring rear suspension and the one ton has
leaf springs.
