Traveling with Firearms

I did a search for guns and firearms and nothing showed up. Has this ever been discussed? Does anyone travel with a firearm? Best hiding places? Thoughts? Comments?

I believe this has been discussed at length. As far as the best hiding place, if someone gives you an answer to that, guess it would not be a hiding place anymore. I don't know where SpringGrove is but in Texas, most folks travel with a pistol on their hip on in their vehicle, etc. so I am pretty sure most of us do travel armed and are armed most all the time.

Nothing came up? If I were you, I'd search again, as almost every RV forum I visit has this "very" topic appear on a "very" regular basis. Because of the politics behind the discussions, some threads get heated and "locked" quickly. But, for the most part, these threads are in abundance.

The best place to hide is in your most comfortable concealed carry holster, on your body.

Reciprocity between states for concealed carry permits info can be found here (among other places) https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/travel/

The question (not asked, but implied and should be considered) "Does every state consider your RV a "primary domicile" regarding firearms?" you will have to research and decide for yourself for those states you wish to travel through.

Here's one born & raised Texan that's not armed, don't own a gun & not afraid to not be. If you feel the need please by all means be packing heat, I don't. I have a SIL & BIL that are armed all the time & that scares me way worse than not having a gun. Been border to border coast to coast several times the last 10 years & have never once wished I had a weapon. Just my .02 cents.

For those that don't want a firearm, that's fine. That was a popular option when I was growing up but in the world we now live in it may be time to revisit that notion. Having retired from law enforcement I can legally carry in all 50 states and do. That said, there are places that even I am forbidden to go with a firearm. Hiding it in your vehicle is an option but a better solution is gun safes that are made specifically for vehicles. The decision is yours but it's good to hear of citizens exercising their second amendment rights. Carry on!

Since I have no idea what a SIL & BIL means, will have to pass on comment. I will say that you have a right to carry arms but certainly are not required to. I live in a VERY rural area and we have critters and bad people come through the area now and again and I will protect my own as needed. Our precinct in Medina County has more miles of roads than all Uvalde county combined and our county Sheriff only has six deputies. If I called 911 needing deputy assistance, it might take 45-60 minutes for one to get to my property. We all live in different places and situations so I am not judging; my comment relates to my experience and in my experience most folks in my neck of the woods carry. I like the comment "packing heat"... don't see this much except in old gangster movies and such. Haven't heard it for awhile.

I got stopped a couple of weeks ago for speeding coming into a small town (5 over). The city officer was sitting under a bridge right at the city limit sign and reading me back on the highway before I got into the town. I went ahead and pulled over, gave him my license and CC permit. He asked if I was armed and where. I told him yes and on my right hip. He asked that I not make movements to that area and I told him that is where my wallet is and he nodded. Came back in a few minutes and gave me a warning and told me "thanks for exercising your constitutional right to carry a weapon"; I reciprocated and told him I appreciated what he did for all of us and we bid each other a good day.

New Mexico is an open carry state...Anyone who can lawfully own a firearm can generally carry that firearm openly, in public, except in places specifically not allowed. Even if a non-resident. However, a concealed carry permit is required for concealed carry OFF of one's own property. On one's own property, it is legal to carry concealed. Not all states have concealed-carry reciprocity with New Mexico. My brother-in-law was recently visiting from Indiana, where he can legally carry concealed. New Mexico doesn't recognize Indiana's concealed carry permit, but it was fully legal for him to carry his sidearm openly/unconcealed here in New Mexico.

Since a mode of transportation, in New Mexico, is considered an extension of one's home, one CAN carry concealed INSIDE, or on, a vehicle, or have the firearm concealed within/on a vehicle. This means car, truck, bus, motorcycle, RV, and I recently learned even means if one is riding a horse.

The other side of the coin is that any property owner or business can specifically prohibit firearms on their property/premises, and gun owners must abide, as long as the property owner/business puts up signs that state so.

New Mexico, overall, is a pretty "gun-friendly" state.

Be glad you have the rights you do. In Canada we can (so far) own handguns and of course rifles/shotguns. Handguns require background checks, registering and a authorization to transport (ATT). This allows us to take our handguns to the range and gunsmiths, border crossings etc anytime but they must be locked up , out of reach, unloaded and ammo in separate box. Long guns can be transported anytime without special paperwork. All of this is fine with me if it reduces crime. However most gun crime here is gang people shooting other gang people over drug money etc. They are not using registered guns so regulations will not stop any of it anways. Yes we have the same drug problems as the USA perhaps not quite as bad (YET). Because of this gun crime they are trying to take away the rights of law abiding gun owners to even have them now. Of course criminals being criminals by definition do not follow laws so only the innocent will actually be unarmed. Classical political foolishness. Even many Police chiefs are saying that picking on the law abiding gun owner makes no sense but we all know politicians. And of course their body guards will have guns although we shouldn't need them anymore , right? LOL

We have the same useless argument here. Still trying to understand how making a law abiding citizen give up their gun will stop the criminals from using theirs.

I am a gun owner, I do not carry on my person nor in the truck.. I do have it in the camper, just in case. There are times we camp in areas during the week where not a lot of people are at nights. i will then have it handy.. Also if we are out i try to not put us in a situation where a firearm would be needed.. However,, i do carry in a front pocket a pocket size canister of red pepper mace...just in case...

Unfortunately you don't have to have a brain to be a politician as we can all see on a regular basis. Here they tried twisting the wording to fool the public. This is what was said in the media "We have found that over 50% of the traceable guns come from within Canada now. So if we remove those guns they can't get them !" Note the keyword is traceable. So only Canadian guns are traceable as we have no way of knowing where they came from or who owned them without a registration. So if a 1000 guns were confiscated in crimes. And 5 were registered in canada (therefore Traceable )that statement would be true. See what I mean? But the public hears ' The majority of the guns confiscated are all from within Canada now so lets ban guns".
Very frustrating. And for those who don't know, there are millions of legal gun owners in Canada too.

And as often happens, these threads take the path this one is. There has been 2 posts directing the OP to the information needed.

If no one else has any pertinent information, I will lock this one too.

Can't recommend a safe hiding space in the RV as the layouts are different. I do recommend a decent gun or regular safe you can bolt down. Won't stop a determined thief, but will keep the kids out of it while you're traveling. Used to carry a safe in our TT under the bed. That way it was a) concealed and b) locked away from the kids.

A friend of mine found a nice panel behind the TV, where he installed a mini-wall safe.

Be sure to check out the states laws you are planning to visit. They vary a lot.

Forgot to add that one bonus for the safe is I like to carry enough cash to last at least 5 days on the road. Just in case I loose my ATM card, etc. The safe is a good place to store $500 and a spare credit card for that emergency.
