James, the 2144# is the 'real world' number, not the happy crap thrown around by the truck manufacturing ads and brochures. All the manufactures are guilty of this.

Yup, just like the shipping weight and tongue/pin weight in travel trailer/fifth wheel brochures.... PURE FICTION !!!!! (but it sure sells bigger trailers to owners of "too small tow vehicles")....

Reminds me of the "weight loss ads" on TV... "You too can lose 50 pounds your first week with XXXX diet plan".... Uhhhh really ????? Send me two so I can lose 100 pounds before next Monday......

The reason for this post is that there are several fifth wheel models that are of interest to us:

Sprinter Campfire 32fwbh (1680# Pin Weight, 12080# GVWR)
Hideout 299rlds (1605# Pin Weight, 11200# GVWR)
Hideout 308bhds (1820# Pin Weight, 11700# GVWR)
Hideout 292mls (1510 Pin Weight, 11000# GVWR)

I feel pretty comfortable with bumper pulled trailers and sizing them up vs the truck but am a 100% noob when it comes to fifth wheels. I would be interested to hear the opinion of those more experienced in the matter than I. I know that typically speaking, a 3/4 Ton is not a good fit for fifth wheel duty due to the payload rating, and for that reason, the ones I listed are also some of the lightest you can get without being a "compromised" SuperLight/UltraLight/Half-Ton version.

I too, occasionally look at 5th wheel options as I really like the additional storage options and the towing differences. I have about 800-900 lbs more payload capacity on my truck due to it being a gas model vs your diesel.

Some of the considerations I usually take into account are how am I going to load bikes and kayaks with a 5th wheel. I also try to keep the length in the 30-35' range so I don't lose a lot of the available campsite options that are available at the state parks in NY.

I almost turned around the other day leaving a park, I had just seen a newer Ram DRW CC with a roof rack with Kayaks, pulling a 5er and was wondering if it would clear my bikes in the Pin box rack.

rhagfo, a possible way to carry your kayaks without worry would be a T bar into a front hitch and a single Thule roof bar. That would probably put your kayaks far enough forward to clear the bikes
