Military CGs & RV Parking

Being retired military we used military CGs and RV Parks all around the country. They are everywhere, From ME to CA or ND to south TX.

About 15 years ago a retired USAF MSGT named Larry Farquhar developed this web page -- http://www.militarycampgrounds.us/ --. It provides just about the best information about military campgrounds that you’re going to find on the WWW. It has always been our go-to reference.

Because there are a lot of military and ex-military members in this forum I thought I would share our experiences at various locations around the country and a picture of each parking site.

This first one is not really a military RV Park. It belongs to the American Legion post 137 at Jacksonville, FL. (http://www.post137.com/rv-park-pictures.html )
This little park has 8 sites. They are located behind the club and Olympic size pool area. The area is gated and has a dual paved boat launch into the Cedar River. Length of stay is 30 days. Reservations are accepted. Anyone with prior military service can get a site with proper identification (DD214) from any service. Of course members from other posts around the country are welcome.

This first picture is our rig parked in site #6, our favorite. The second is me in my little Walker Bay headed upstream for some pan fish for supper.

Being from SC as I am, you should check out Short Stay if you have not before.

There are many great ones. Like the private and public ones it is tougher to get reservations. Check the reviews just like anywhere else.

Don't forget active duty has first priority then retirees, 100% DAV, DOD employees, and some contractors are usually permitted. Not all vets, must have a DOD ID.

RV Park & Family CG – Fort Bliss, TX

This facility is located off base so there are no scrutinized vehicle inspections.

When traveling I-10 out west we always tried to spend some time at this location. It’s a great location to park and explore El Paso and the surrounding area.

Fort Bliss is a large base with all amenities equally large.

Right across the highway from the park the USA has a 36 hole golfing facility. It has courses with par 72 & 67 lay-outs.

The RV Park is very modern with individual buildings for individual activities. I’ve included a link that has the park location and its costs and rules.

Laughton AFB FAMCAMP

One year after a couple of months at a Yuma, AZ senior park we decided to leave early and meander along the border all the way to Brownsville, TX. It was a great adventure for we were traveling alone; our traveling companions were heading to CA for a granddaughter high school graduation.

When we got to Del Rio, TX we decided to stop for about 10 days. The Laughton AFB MWR has two FAMCAMPS. One is on base and the other is out on the Amistad Reservoir. We wanted to take advantage of the on base amenities such as the commissary and Post Exchange so we stayed at one of the large on base sites. Area wise the base is small and compact and real easy to find everything. We did go out on a week day and spent a night at a cabin, rented a boat and did some fishing in the beautiful waters at the large lake.

On base we had a large corner site with privacy fences on both sides.

Here is an active link for researching both locations and a map.

How far in advance can you reserve at the Coast Guard stations?

Reservations times are set by th CO. Have to check with each. Many have different times for active duty then all others later.

Post commanders rule the roost, so to speak, when it comes to RV Park, CG or FAMCAMP management. Each post will have different rules. Probably 98% of the military recreational areas are listed in the link I provided in the first post, including their reservation policy, if they are allowed.

RV Park Naval Air Station, Lemoore, CA

This one is out in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley between highways I-5 & CA-99. If you’re not from the area or have reasons to be there you’ll probably never visit this RV Park. Once, long ago, we lived aboard the NAS for almost 4 years and had to go back just for a look see.

The RV Park is smallish but has a great location being convenient to just about all of the base amenities. After a one week visit we were ready to find civilization again.

Here is their MWR Link.

As has been mentioned advance reservation times are different everywhere! Elizabeth City we called a week prior and Marathon Key we made 6 months out.

Most of the base campgrounds also have cabin rentals in case you want to have guests come with you that don’t have trailers. As an eligible user you can also rent a cabin or second Rv site for your guests.

Another MWR benefit is that some larger bases have TT they will rent to those who would like to try before they purchase to find out if they even like camping!

NAS Corpus Christi, TX, RV Park

This base has a wonderful recreation department. They have just about everything available for check-out including fishing equipment. There is a modern fishing pier jutting out into the bay with ample parking. They have live and cut baits available at the MWR equipment building where you check-in.

The base has all the amenities expected of a large facility including a championship par 72 golf course.

It was a first for us. We got to pick a site with a covered patio/picnic area for our two week stay.

We were there in the early spring and the Reds were being caught in the surf out on Padre Island, just a short drive over the bridge and out on the island where you can drive on the beach. I almost got my dually stuck. HP & Torque saved me. Might have been just a little too heavy for where I parked to surf fish…LOL!

At the RV Park our site was about ¼ mile from the fishing pier. As you can see in the pictures we had a clear view of the bay and had a morning visitor eating the fresh clover every day.

In this link you’ll find all the information about the RV Park and recreational facilities.

Barksdale AFB FAMCAMP – Bossier City, LA

At the time of this stop We were traveling east to west heading for Yuma, AZ were we would winter for a couple of months.

When we got to the FAMCAM it was getting cloudy but we got in and all hooked-up before the rain started. I got up on the trailer and took the picture of the reservation area parking and camp office building.

The FAMCAMP is quite secluded from all other activities on the base. Good fishing in all the waters around the CG.

We had signed into the first-come first- section of the CG for a week. At Just about dark 30 it started to rain and kept on raining for 90% of the time we were there. We were traveling with our long time Navy friends Don & Betty Doole. On Thanksgiving Day we went over to the general mess and had dinner with the troopes. They knew we were retired Navy Ardales. We had a great time swapping sea stories.

USN Foster Creek RV Park – Charleston, SC

The RV parked used to be a single wide mobile home park so the sites are quite large.

I have an aunt and uncle and 5 1st cousins living just up the road in Moncks Corner, SC so I often stay in the area. If it’s fishing and party time we stay at Short Stay, a little closer to Moncks Corner.

In the reference you will see some pictures of our rig. The blue Chevy & Montana belongs to our traveling companions. Ours is the first one is on the main page. I’ve always sent Larry campground pictures and a critique of the military CGs we visit. He almost always uses a couple of my pictures.

We always have visitors when in the Charleston area. Some even come down and stay overnight.

It’s a great place to stay when enjoying a Charleston experience.

Naval Air Facility El Centro, CA RV Park

Palm Oasis RV Park & Resort. That’s its name and it’s out in the desert, away from just about everything. It has a community atmosphere because in the winter months the RV residents outnumber the base residents.

It’s not a place we ever planned to visiting. I had been there a couple of times when on active duty. Back then it was known as the National Parachute Test Range (NPTR) and mostly Navy attack squadrons from other bases around the country came there to practice bombing in the nearby bomb ranges. Later on it became a NAF when the Blue Angle flight demonstration squadron made it their winter home.

We stayed there for a couple of months because of the excessive rain fall and mud sliding in areas in southern CA we had planned on spending our winter months. It was also raining in the deserts near El Centro and a lot of people were leaving because the dune buggy riders had no place to ride and went elsewhere. We were very surprised when we called from San Diego and were told there were a couple of sites available for us in the overflow area. That particular area had full hook-up service with 30 amps and another 15 amp plug-in for extension cords.

Our site was located in an old paved parking lot and backed-up to a ball field. Across the street there is a bowling alley, chow hall and a golf driving range. We could eat in the chow hall without reservations except on weekends and holidays. We got our mail from a general delivery box at a US post office about three miles outside the main gate.

It you can’t find something to do on base there isn’t much else close by. We did find a nice 9 hole golf course about 10 miles away. After we had been there for about a week the Blue Angles showed-up and there were no more quiet days except on Sundays. We had dish TV and finding a nice clear signal was no problem at all.

The rain caught up with us and it rained so long and hard they had to rent huge trucks with vacuum hoses to get the water out of the parking lots around base. We drove over to Yuma and found people were also leaving there for other areas and we found a couple of side by side sites to spend another couple of months in.

The link below has lots of good information and more pictures.
