Coat rack mounting - velcro too weak

I mounted a coat rack on the side wall using velcro that I thought was rated strong enough for 2 or 3 coats, but apparently I underestimated the weight of the coats, as the velcro halves separated. Both stayed stuck to their respective parts, just not to each other. As there are no studs available where I want it, apparently I need some kind of moly fastener through the wall panel - who's used what with good success?

That's the strongest velcro I'm aware of and has a great strength. Velcro has a very good hold in a "pull apart" scenario, ie pulling the 2 surfaces apart at zero deg angles, but as you are using it the forces are in a sheer force. FWIW

We bought a coat tree from amazon and it works great, no need to hang anything on the wall.

I took a second look and then recalled I used ~2" diameter round circles of velcro - 1 in each corner.
I'll change out to a full length strip of the interlock/superlock velcro noted above and give it a try.
If that doesn't work, then I guess some kind of molly or anchor bolts will be next.

I made up an oak coat hook and mounted it between the entry door and the LR slide. One screw goes into the aluminum stud, the other onto a hollow door anchor that is nothing more then a big screw in gadget. You drill a small hole and using a Phillip's screw driver, turn into place. You then put a small screw in that. One caution - make sure that the regular screw is shorter then the wall thickness. I just added a stair rail and did it the same way - a hefty screw in the aluminum stud then 5 hollow door anchors to hold it the rest of the 48" length.

Coat rack mounting - velcro too weak

I have had success holding heavier items like a small shelf unit to the foam core side walls using the following technique:

* drill 1/4" hole (for #8 screw anchor) approximately 3/4" deep in the wall where I want a screw

* cut off the tip of the self drilling plastic drywall screw-in anchor so it is only left with the screw thread section

* inject silicone in the drilled hole

* screw in the modified anchor

* let the silicone cure for a day

* mount your item to the anchor

Here is the type of anchor I use:

I use Command strips to mount everything in the TT. I mounted a fishing rod holder with Command strips and it works great.

These extreme outdoor velcro strips will solve your mounting issues, guaranteed. I bought them for things around the house and trailer; they do not disappoint. Just read the reviews.

If by coats you mean heavy late fall/winter coats then I would use nothing short of screws and anchors. If your wall is like mine, the finish will rip off if you use an industrial adhesive on the Velcro. Command strips work great but I wouldn't put a heavy coat on one.

I used screws and anchors for this home made coat rack, works great.

Thanks, Bill. That's similar to mine, so I guess screws and anchors it will be.

Just make sure you slide can retract without hitting the hooks. If I remember right I hit one stud and used an anchor on the other screw. It's a good location for the rack.

Here's another simple mod that's been very useful.

Coat rack mounting - velcro too weak

I have no slide on my entry door side, so no obstructions ... also no studs. I assume I have a stud along the door frame and one in the rear corner, but it is 26" between them, so maybe there is one?

I have also used these on our thin walls.
They are strong and very easy to install
