Winterize our winterized Bullet

We bought our 2018 Keystone Bullet by Colt from dealer last November and it came winterized according to sticker. What does this entail when dealers do the winterize? Any tips suggestions on this particular trailer? (171RKCT). We traveled with our trailer last winter with no problems. A few weeks of freezing temps. Being newbies, were we just fortunate to dodge the bullet (no pun intended lol) using in winter or did the winterizing do it's job. Didn't consume the water but used facilities. Definitely need to get ready for the big freeze coming. Thanks in advance and pardon my rambling post

Winterizing your trailer is an important part of protecting the fresh water system, both hot and cold as well as the waste water collection system. It also involves protecting the refrigerator from growing mold, protecting the battery/batteries from discharge and potential freeze damage as well as preventing rodent/insect infestation. Don't forget to air up your tires and apply a protective dressing to them as well as cover them to prevent UV and moisture damage. Depending on where you store your trailer, winterizing may also include protecting the outer surfaces from leaf, wind, falling ice, damage as well as protecting it from theft and water damage.

Most of us think of "winterizing" as the end of the camping season and storage of the RV for the rest of the year. It's really more than that, it's also an opportunity to get things cleaned up, lubed up, repaired, tightened (or loosened) if needed as well as a general inspection for things that might need repair though the "non-use time"....

X 2 on John's comment. Think of it this way, If you take your vehicle to a garage for an oil change typically they include an "X" number point inspection, i.e. they check fluids, belts, battery, brakes, tire inflation, etc. The winterization should include the adjustments and inspections recommended in your owner's manual. If you are not comfortable doing that then pay someone to do it. Ignoring it will cost you more money in the future.

We had a few days just at freezing last week so I just winterized today. No one local had any antifreeze in stock, so I had to drive 30 miles to the nearest Walmart Supercenter, and was surprised to find a name brand, Sta-Bil -75 F at less than $3/gallon. Last year I paid $5 for an unknown brand of -50 pink stuff. It worked fine, but we neve got below 20F last winter. That 1/4” lowpoint drain takes forever, I learned that it’s much faster to use the pump and drain using faucets until empty, but even the the lowpoint took another 20 minutes.

What temps can you get by for a few days? I've seen lows that are right at freezing tonight (31-33). I haven't winterized, since I plan on picking it up tomorrow or Thursday to go camping. Will low 30s be a problem for one night?

I've been thinking about going to storage and pulling the low point drains.

Last week we had lows of 30, 32 and 28, and I didn't winterize until Saturday, no problems. It takes sustained temperatures below freezing to do damage. If it hits 28-30 at night but warms during the day there should be no problem. It's easy to tell if you have a birdbath or dog water dish outside, if it doesn't freeze your trailer should be OK.

Why not just run the furnace on low. If you have good batteries should be good for overnight. JMO

I've thought about it. Either way I would need to run to storage tonight.

I plan on running the furnace tomorrow night when I get it home.

I decided to unscrew the low point drain plugs. I left them off and left all faucets open (pressed on the toilet flush to relieve any pressure).

What about keeping the Rv plugged into shore power all the time when storing, or just between use?

I generally leave mine plugged in all the time while in storage. I do disconnect every now and then if I'm in town for a few days but generally just leave it plugged in. Make sure you have a converter that provides a trickle charge. You also need to keep an eye on your battery water when on all the time. I had constant trouble with water levels for almost 2 years trying to use the mismatched batteries installed on the trailer when I bought it new. Installed 2 new interstates and they don't use water like they used to.

When Bullet list Winterized on its sticker it does not mean the water system has been winterized. It means the trailer has winter insulation and sealed bottom and ducts from the furnace to warm the bottom and pipes.
