Tunnel Restrictions

Is there a trip planning site or app that provides tunnel restrictions of propane tanks with an alternative route suggested?

I know the Good Sam trip planner will warn you of low underpasses, but I'm not sure about tunnels. You must be a GS member to access it, however. Rerouting is a manual process - you drag the route (like Google Maps).

If you know what route you are taking check the state web site for tunnel restrictions. The state web sites usually provide a link to tunnels and tolls within the state. They should give you alternative routes if they have restrictions.

Most of the tunnels I've traveled through only require the valves to be closed while traveling through. Some have signs for trailers to pull to the side and be inspected to make sure the valves are closed. I suppose there are exceptions, I haven't experienced any yet.

I found this linking while planning a trip to Canada last summer. I cannot vouch for completeness and overall accuracy, but it kept us out of trouble between Virginia and Newfoundland Labrador.

Taxrew, if you do a search on this site you will find that your propane tanks generally do not qualify for the general restrictions of the tunnels. On occasion the authorities will require that they be turned off. We covered this extensively some months ago so it shouldn't be hard to find.

I use Good Sam routing since I can upload trip to my Rand McNally GPS. Plan on laptop, upload. Recently did 9,120 cross country trip. Map software warned about LP tunnel restrictions on I95 through Baltimore. Can't have more than 5 pounds (I think). Dragged to another route, and another tunnel warning. Had to take I695 and cross Francis Scott Key bridge. Beautiful view but long high bridge crossings towing gives me the heebee geebies.

Yes, the Fort McHenry tunnel and Harbor Tunnel have a 10 pound per container limit.

Tunnel Restrictions

Two things you can get. Get a truckers atlas. It shows bridge heights and restrictions. Also there is an app called All Stays. You set your own restrictions and and bridge height restrictions.

I have been traveling this route for years and find that taking the western loop (I 695) towards Towson MD is the best. Avoids the FS Key bridge and a long climb. Western loop is a little longer mile wise but takes the same time and is easier driving. I always plan to go through that area at night to avoid traffic and most of the crazies.

Travel safely, take your time and enjoy the trip, Hank

Trip Planning

Our last trip was 17,938 miles. We're going to stick with All Stays and the truckers Atlas.
