Wanted: 2015 or 2016 Keystone Outback 316rl

We're Looking for a lovingly used 2015 or 2016 Keystone Outback 316rl with a dining bench. We're planning on full timing and the 316rl has good storage.

It's frustrating being quoted 'new trailer' pricing for a trailer which is three to two years old. We have visited dealers, in CA and OR, letting them know which trailer we want. When we get to the dealer, the 316rl turns out to be a different trailer. Just wasting our time.

RV Trader on-line might be your best bet. After that Craigslist. We are coming into camping season so prices might be a bit higher.

I hate to bring this up but have you checked weights on the trailer vs your truck? It says you have a 2016 Ram ecodiesel. Max tow for those maxes out at about 8800 lbs. with an auto and quad cab. The trailer gvw is approx. 9500 lbs. Max payload is 1220 - 1390 depending on trim. Outdoorsman shows to be 1390. Tongue weight on the 316rl will be in the neighborhood of 12-1300 lbs. so you will be over payload with just a hitch.

The numbers above are generic. Your truck will give you specific payload and axle numbers. A scale would give you the rest but on the surface it looks like the trailer may be a bit too much for your truck IMO. If so, now is the time to regroup instead of later when you find you made a mistake.

^^ Agree with sourdough. Our 2013 Ram 1500 Bighorn has the same payload as all Ram quad cabs for that year. This is 1480# with trailer tow rating of 6600# to 10000# depending on rear axle ratio. Check the numbers for your year and axle ratio. Good luck with your search.

Hi;
Thanks for noticing the weight issue between trailer and truck. The trailer is going to be our home and will move twice a year, 500 miles north and then return to CA in the fall.

Before we purchased the 2016 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman, Eco Diesel, Crew cap and 3.92 rear axle ratio, we too did the calculation. The Outback paperwork states the GWV of the 316rl as 9000 and the hitch weight as 980 lbs. We realize that we are near the limits. The annual travel will consists of two trips.

For traveling we have our 17’ Casita fiberglass trailer.

Those two links are our go to places right now. Still have a difficult time evaluating if the ‘asking’ price is realistic or not.

I know you've looked at the brochure. Below is a link to the Keystone website. It's on the Outback page. Go down and tab the blue arrow until you see the specs for the 316rl. It's gvw will be the shipping weight and carrying capacity combined (9500 lbs.). The hitch weight shows to be 980...dry. Figure about 15% of gvw for hitch = 1425 lbs. for loaded hitch weight. You might get by with 1300 but it's still going to exceed your truck payload with hitch alone - no people, no "stuff".

Base weight of truck is 5688 lbs. with a gvwr of 6800 lbs (with AT tires). The hitch weight alone will put you over gvwr. GCWR of the truck is 13,750. Trailer is 9500 gvw and truck is 5668 base. Total weight for this combo is 15,168 without hitch, people, truck upgrades etc. 1418 over gcvwr before you start. It appears you will exceed every weight category with the exception of GAWR and you won't know that until you scale it.

Not harping and won't mention it again, just want to make sure you really understand the numbers. If you choose to go this route make SURE you get a good weight distribution hitch with sway control. Whatever you use on the Casita won't get the job done.

I don't think I said that we were going to use towing equipment from the Casita (weight distribution hitch/sway bar) on the Keystone. The Casita is 17' while the Keystone is 35'. Then, one trailer could weigh 3500 lbs and the Keystone could weight 9000 lbs. Not the same conversation.

When it comes to travel, our Casita does get job done , especially when the travel group consists of 2 people.

Good for you! I was worried because you obviously didn't understand weights and what is required to safely tow them. You didn't say you were using whatever you were using on the Casita....but you didn't say you weren't, so I tried to give you some direction.

I'm thinking "travel" would also include a 500 mile trip, one way, with an overloaded truck would fit that description I suppose that is the same conversation Especially when the trailer will be 9500 lbs. and max you out on everything. That's your call.

BTW: a Casita? For "travel"? I know that many travel in smaller trailers and love them but at 38' our trailer seems very confining. I hope you don't find the same situation. Good luck on your choice and travels.

Note: When I speak of the small travel trailer and being confining, I'm speaking of long term habitation. We've used all kinds of smaller things; tents, cabovers, popups, smaller trailers all our life. They're great for a few days. Weeks, months? No, they don't work for us. Just a clarification.
