Dish/Wally EHD?

I just went to Dish with a Wally in my 5ver. You can connect an external hard drive for recording shows (with a $40 one time charge at set up) via USB. Drive must be USB 2.0 compatible, no more than 2 TB and have an EXTERNAL power supply (not via the USB as is almost always the case).

I know that I can buy a 1 TB drive on the Dish partner website but want 2 TB if possible. Anyone have a SPECIFIC make/model and where to buy a 2 TB EHD meeting these criteria?

George,

I would purchase an external HDD docking station and then a 2 TB HDD, its a lot cheaper and once you fill up the HDD you can pop in another.

RoscoeV, You are probably about 75 years younger than me. This is my first foray into external hard drives. Here is a CHEAP docking station from Amazon (sorry for the long link):

https://www.amazon.com/SMAKN%C2%AE-S...2%3A1248879011

OK... now all I have to do is buy a a 2.5" or 3.5" SATA hard drive and slip it in (don't know or have ever heard SATA previously)????? Could you suggest a docking station and hard drive that might have a chance of working together if this one doesn't? TIA!!!

Roscoe, Never mind; found a Western Digital EHD 2TB MyBook for under $50 with free ship. Has an A/C adapter for power. Should be good. THANKS!

It's funny that they claim an external power supply is necessary, but the one they sell on the DishForMyRV partner site doesn't use an external power supply and it works just fine. Also worth mentioning that you can buy what appears to be the exact same Seagate drive from Amazon for about $50 less.

Yeah, I know. I found a Western Digital 2TB under $50 shipped that does have an external power supply. I also found that if you want to connect to your hotspot to use the voice remote feature, NO repeat NO wireless adapter will work except for one Netgear model they rebrand as Dish and sell for a ton of money. You can find the Netgear version for under $20 on eBay.

Daggummmm! We need to check IDs to ensure kids don't log on bwhahaha The WD hard drive should show today or tomorrow. Another foray into tech that will end up making me even more humble. Every leap in tech makes me fall down the ladder a bit and I am right about on the bottom of tech savvy. I need to adopt a teen ager who can also use a week whacker!

In case anyone with a Wally (perhaps other non DVR receivers) wants a network wifi adapter, the ONLY one that will work is a Netgear M/P# 179048. I have a bunch of network wifi adapters, including a different Netgear and NONE work. Will make sure my new network adapter works tomorrow. Have to get some work done today.

I have a hopper and joey in my house and a Wally in the 5ver. Could I instead of buying the wally used the joey or hopper instead ? I bought the 1 tb hard drive for the wally,, am disappointed that you can only record 1 program at a time,,, well maybe spoiled too.

Depends on your antenna system. If you're using a Dish Tailgater then no. I don't know which of the more expensive mobile dish system might be compatible.

The hard drives are typically just a laptop hard drive. I have the 1 TB hard drive plus I have an extra hard drive that I can change out with just a few screws.

Last of the dumb tips... if you do go with Dish, Wally and Playmaker (that is my config), the Wally loses track of things after a day or two and you need to let it go through a complete reset; acquire satellites, check switch and then download guide. This takes about 15 minutes. Problem is, you MAY get a message saying you need to have Dish activate the service. OK, the fix: Download a mydish app to your phone. Once it is loaded, go to the SERVICES tab on the bottom and on the bottom of that page you can activate your own receiver. This only works if you have first purchased service, of course.
