Military RV Parking Review

Pelican Roost RV Park - Naval Station, Mayport, FL

This is a very popular place to park if you qualify and are visiting the Jacksonville, FL area.

Mayport Naval Station is located at the mouth of the St. Johns River. The St. Johns flows from the south and is Florida’s largest river.

The RV park is situated on the St Johns jetty sea wall. It’s not shown in the picture because it’s another quarter mile out on the jetty road at the bottom left in the picture in the link below.

The MWR facility at Mayport has a large inventory of recreational equipment. All the equipment you might need for a day of fishing from the jetties at the RV park can be checked-out there. They also have live and cut bait. The on site RV park office also has a good selection of cut baits.

Pelican Roost is on the south jetty. There is a short ferry boat ride across the river to the north jetties available in the village of Mayport.

The following links are pictures I’ve taken during various stays at different times of the year. Sites can be smallish and very close together to spacious with lots of extra space to put up a tent or screen room.

We stayed there last Apr for a week. Sites are as you say, but overall very nice camping. Really enjoyed fishing off the rocks and visiting the local beaches. Tried to reserve for Apr 2019, but I am retired civil service and cannot reserve yet. Thank you for serving our country.

I knew that some bases allow retired DoD employees to use the RV sites, but I didn't realize that retired civil service might be welcomed also. DW is retired BOP (26 years) so we tried to stay at the NAS just south of New Orleans and were told it was military only. The manager told us it wasn't part of their program but he would make an exception just that one time. DW told him thanks, but we would abide by their "program" and instead stay just down the road at the Louisiana State Park. We had some pretty good banter when he found out we were Marine veterans. Finally we ganged up on him and won the argument.

Bunch of nice targets there in port. Won’t take much of a shooting solution.
Guess Pelicans Roost just made my list of places to go! We are also in SC and USN Retired.

The commissary and NEX are in a combined off base facility about a mile down Mayport road from the main gate. Best to GPS it until you get used to the location, it’s very easy to miss.

There are two med sized NEX satellite locations on base. The 18 hole golf course, also on base, has a nice restaurant and great golf equipment in the golf shack. It’s a true links course. There is a back gate with easy access to the Mayport Ferry. Great dune riding on the north jetties. Fishing is best on the south jetties.

The CPO club restaurant - on the beach - is very popular and normally packed at lunch time. Lot’s of sand dollars on the beach, especially up near the jetties.
