New Fifth Wheeler In The UK

Hi all
Liz here from over in the UK; myself and my two elderly greyhounds are the proud owners (at least they WILL be proud, once they get used to it....) of a Keystone Cougar Fifth Wheel as of the start of this month. Has been a nightmare trying to get it all set up in February - seemed like a good idea at the time - but getting there and Spring is just round the corner. SO pleased to have found this site as there are not many Fifth Wheels over here so all advice from the experts is welcome! Have already picked up some really useful info and look forward to hearing about more adventures - starting to feel like perhaps I wasn't quite as crazy as I thought I was a couple of weeks ago (the dogs may take a bit more persuading....!).

Thanks Jim I'm already getting into it and starting to think it might end up being one of the best things I've done. Very jealous reading about all your journeys across the States and Canada - we're just too small over here!

Do you find many RV parks over there? How are the UK roads for RVing? How did you find the Cougar?

Welcome to the forum from Radium Hot Springs BC.
Curious what size is your Cougar and what do you tow it with?

Hi Richard thanks for your comment. I found this forum, which is a UK version of this forum which I found recently - http://www.fifthwheelownersclub.com/Forum/portal.php - which has a map of RV friendly sites but it is a little tricky to find places that will take you - a lot of sites have a maximum 8.5m length restriction. The motorways and A roads are fine I guess (I got mine sited for me so a way off trying to tow it myself yet!) and all the US imports have to comply with UK width restrictions so there should be no reason why there should be any problem, although some roads out in the country would be interesting I'm sure.

Hi Steve and Joe from BC! The Cougar is a 33ft bunkhouse and I got it sited - I discovered I don't have the right licence categories to tow it myself so the place (plus the idea of me towing this thing just wouldn't be right for the rest of the population...! Although I am intending to learn) I got it from sited it for me. The guy used a Ford 150. I'm hoping to be on this site for a few months and then I'll get it relocated somewhere else - eventually I'd like to tour it but that may be a way off at the moment, sometime after I've figured out the waste system and converted the US LPG to UK LPG etc etc etc!

Welcome to the forum from Southern MD USA. Enjoy your rig. I'm surprised they sited it using an F150.

Hi Tbos and thank you! I've been trying to find out what would be the best (I know everyone has a different opinion) but what would be powerful enough to tow a 33ft trailer - over here people seem to use Nissan Navarras and Toyota Hiluxes to tow 5ers but they're not usually as big as this one. Wouldn't you expect the 150 to be powerful enough? Thanks.

Lizzie,
Maybe your trucks are different than those in the USA. Your 5er probably has a pin weight close to 2000 US pounds. The truck that toes it should be capable of carrying a pin weight that large or larger.

Hi Tom
No, you're probably right - he probably did it wrong! He was the one that told me I could tow on my licence and I found out later that I can't....!

Congratulations Liz and welcome to the forum. I spent many years traveling to Europe on business. Even spent two months last year at an agriturismo in Italy that had a campground. I've never seen anything bigger than a class C in Europe. Are 5ers popular in the U.K. and are there plenty of roads and parks that can accommodate the big rig? I certainly envy the beautiful countryside you have to explore. Steve

Hi Tom
I've been doing some looking into things (better late than never!) and i totally see your point. I'm guessing he manages with a Ford 150 because Lincolnshire to Bedfordshire, where the van was and where it is now, is very flat. Would that make sense? Thanks.
