Sidewinder Pin Box - Paint Chipping

My new 5th wheel has been unfortunately sitting unused all summer due to me having shoulder surgery. I'll thankfully be able to squeeze in a camping trip this month before wintering it. While looking at my trailer this weekend I noticed the paint was peeling/chipping off my sidewinder pin box (the underneath section). Basically all the paint peeled right off and I'm now down to rusting metal. I can clean it up, but it's going to keep rusting, is this a problem when I go to hitch it up? I'll spray it real good with grease, but I'm not sure if I should try and spray paint it? <-- I'm thinking that's not a good idea.

You could paint it. Clean it real good, and I would use a good etching primer. Grease shouldnt be needed since the pin box doesn't rotate on the hitch.

Re: Sidewinder Pin Box - Paint Chipping

We live in the northern part of Michigan and during the winter face a lot of salt on the roads. That causes a big problem with rust. I've found a product called "Rustoleum Rust Reformer" that works really well to "convert rust" and provide a protective coating once dry. It's a "water base" liquid that brushes on the rust spots and when it dries, it's black (and blends very well).

I've used it on all of my farm implements, tractor, lawn power equipment, pole barn steel and the frame on my vehicles for a number of years. It stops rust from forming. All I do is use a brass brush (or steel toothbrush for small areas) to knock the rust off, wipe it with acetone and apply the Rustoleum with an acid brush. It goes on like "paint stripper" in consistency, and once dry, turns black. So far, in about 15 years of use, I've never had rust form where I've applied it. Of course, rust will form "right next to it" if the paint is damaged in the future, so I do a "quick check" of everything in the fall, just to get ready for the next "rust season".....

An 8 ounce bottle has lasted me 2 or 3 years and I use it on everything I've got that isn't "showroom appearance required"..... Even in Louisiana, it would stop rust on boat trailers used in salt water. Quite a "handy product".

We use it in spray can.

Re: Sidewinder Pin Box - Paint Chipping

the generic name is phosphoric acid - works great after scaling, or wire brushing (a needle gun is probably the best) - then a good primer coat followed by a color coat

don't use spray paint - go to a real hardware store and get some enamel that brushes on - should last a real long time

Phosphoric acid does work well, but the product I listed above, Rustoleum Rust Reformer is NOT acid based. It is a water based product, Acrylic Vinylidene Chloride Copolymer. It's water based and cleanup is with soap and water. Much easier to use, store and lasts much longer without a top coat required. Of course, using a quality enamel "brush on" paint as a top coat would even protect the metal even better.
