That was my understanding. The odd thing is that Dodge doesn't have the 1,000 mile break in requirement prior to towing (at least they didn't). I think it may now be a 500 break in before towing. I know Ford and Dodge used to use the same axle (Dana), but now Dodge uses American Axle. Which axle does Ford use now?

Personally, I would do a break in service after that 1000 miles by changing the diff oil. There will some metal and limited slip clutch material (hopefully if installed) circulating around.

I also like the increased capacity and other features of the Mag-Hytec diff covers. Much easier to check fluid level (magnetic dipstick) and change the fluid (drain plug) if you do your own work.

Ha, ha, ha!! Now you're trying to stir the pot! Which one are you actually getting?

If memory serves me correctly a gas truck would pull your trailer fine. A diesel would "pull" it finer. As to which one - that is all dependent on you, your situation and finances and how you feel about investing in the diesel. If you are going to tow a lot, encounter grades or upgrade in the future the diesel would be the answer. If not, it's up to you to decide. Good luck on your choice. The bigger truck is what you actually needed if I recall.

I am getting the Diesel. I am planning to keep this Truck till the wheels fall off! Some would say that Diesel is over kill for what I am using it for but I went all in, so I won't make the same mistake twice. Plus I plan on going in the near future to Colorado, California and places with high altitudes.

I think you made the right choice. Although my 6.4 does a good job of towing my trailer to the places I go, I was just in CO with my truck (no trailer) and went over Wolf Creek Pass almost every day. I hadn't noticed it before but I think the altitude was taking a toll on engine power. At least it sure felt it. With that said, my choice will be a diesel as well next go round I'm thinking. Good luck and go have some fun.

No need to debate: Either way, the breakin is the same 1000 miles.....

(As I walk away whistling, "Nothing could be finer than to be in Caro..liner with a D I E S E L...."

I remember my 1st time over Wolfe Creek Pass in June1984. I was pulling a 28' TT with a new Dodge Ramcharger. The 360 struggled prior and I stopped at a 1 door dealership. The mechanic explained about the altitude effect and said to add some diesel to the gas and expect it to smoke. It did and made a difference. Hit the pass and at about mile 14 found snow. Years later ran it several times with a diesel and a little heavier TT. Going that way again with a diesel but going to bypass the Pass as the 43' 5er has me concerned even though the semis do it. A bunch more miles but less pucker factor.

That is what he suggested and what I did in 1984. It worked and smoked.

I'm a very long way from being an engine mechanic or such, but with Today's emission equipment and computer control on every engine/transmission function, adding some diesel to a gas engine might just get you a check engine light or even a shut down issue. I don't think I'd try it on today's engines/cars/trucks/etc.

Re diesel in a gas engine: Number of years ago, friend of mine stopped at a station on the Navajo Res to fill up his Goldwing. Power was off and no one could get gas. Since he was nearly empty, he decided to wait out the power failure. A trucker was also waiting and told him he could siphon a few gallons of diesel from his truck and it would get him home, about 150 miles. Told him to start the bike and then put in the fuel; keep it running and don't shut off til you get to a station to fill with gas. He did it. Bike smoked like crazy but kept running. He filled it up with gas several times next few days and eventually it stopped smoking and ran fine as long as he owned it. I wasn't there but he swears to it.

That was in 1984. Unlikely to be even thought of today.

"Back in the day" if I had a customer with sticky lifters and lots of sludge, I would drain the oil and put 2 gal of diesel fuel in. Idle only for 20 minutes and drain. Worked every time! Would I do it now? Not with the newer engines. Some use oil pressure to change valve timing so it's a no no any more.

There were lots of trucks pulling various sizes of trailers but not any as big as yours if I recall. Of course every year there will be semis,S trucks with trailers, trucks and just cars sitting on the side of the road with overheated engines or brakes. This time it seemed like there were more than usual. Saw one semi with his right rear trailer wheels just smoking - figured he would catch his tire on fire (which I've witnessed before) but never saw him on the return trip. Going back for a month or two in August/Sept so I'll check it out again (some of my favorite fishing spots are over the pass from Pagosa).

Happy Fourth of July Everyone! Thanks for all help! Learned my lesson hopefully other people can learn from my mistake. Here is a pic of the new Truck trying to break it in before our trip in late July.

Truck brakes, trailer brakes, exhaust brake, down hill assist and I'd not even try it. Would not try it with my last 5er at 35' either. I also recall the top 1/2 of the pass covered with snow the 2nd week of June one year. I'll pass the Pass when towing the 5er.

My dad used to do that in the 50's. Drain the (non-detergent) oil, add diesel or kerosene and let the engine idle for a few minutes. Drain, refill with oil and no issues. His engines always ran well and the rocker arm area was always clean when it came time to adjust the valves.

I had a Dodge 360 gas pickup in another state that tended to sit for awhile. One year the lifters were sticking after a period of storage. I added Marvel Mystery Oil and ran it at a high idle for 20 minutes. Fixed the lifters.

Diesel in a gas motor? No.
